In January 2012’s volume of the Journal of Hospital Infection, an article was published by the
Clostridium difficile ward round team from GWH. The ward round is attended by a Consultant
Microbiologist, Antibiotic Pharmacist or Technician, an Infection Prevention and Control Nurse, a
Consultant Gastroenterologist and a Dietician. The article concluded that the Clostridium difficile
ward rounds have helped improve patient care by enabling expertise in management to be brought to
the patient. Audit results show that despite the fact that a Clostridium difficile protocol was in place,
additional interventions were made during the majority of team visits, which further improved the
quality of patient care and also provided educational opportunities for ward staff.
