N = No 5. TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION Technology Integration is a term used by educators to describe effective uses of technology by teachers and students in education and research. Teachers use technology to support instruction. When teachers integrate technology into their classroom practice, learners are empowered to be actively engaged in learning. 6. TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION IN LIBRARIES Technology integration is not only done by teachers but LIS professionals as well. Earlier, librarians were putting people together with the books, journals, magazines and information they need. But, today librarians are expected to be expert at troubleshooting their computers, creating web pages and to do virtual reference services. Therefore, librarians are using all available technologies in library and information centre management to extend effective and efficient LIS services to the user community and try their level best to cater to the ever increasing information requirements of their clients. Integration of technologies in library and information centres empowers their user community to be actively engaged in learning, teaching and research. Most of the Librarians are integrating technologies to achieve the following which will ensure optimum utilization of the valuable library resources by the user community. 1) Automation 2) Networking 3) Digitization 4) Electronic surveillance 5) Electronic Library 6.1 Automation In libraries, automation refers to the process of automating functions such as acquisition, circulation, cataloging and serial control. Library automation ensures effective and efficient services to the user community. Nowadays, most of the 146
libraries, especially academic libraries have automated their services. In some libraries, at least the circulation functions are automated so that the charging, discharging and reservation of documents can be done effectively. As far as the automation of SAU libraries are concerned, the ICAR has liberally funded the libraries to procure SOUL (Software for University Library), developed by INFLIBNET, an Inter-University Centre of the University Grants Commission. The SAUs were also supported by ICAR under NATP for retroconversion of bibliographical records, procurement of hardware and other components required for automation. As far as the select eight SAU libraries in this study are concerned, all the libraries had automated their libraries except Sri Venkateswara Veterinary University, Tirupathi. The details to what extent they automated their library functions are furnished below in Table-3. Table-3: Library Automation in SAU Libraries S. N = No 6.2 Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) Most of the automated libraries are providing Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) which provides access to the library's holdings via a computer monitor, replacing the traditional card catalog. Nowadays, libraries started providing OPAC services over the Intranet / Web which is known as Web OPAC. The Web OPAC services offered by the SAUs are accessible over the LAN/Intranet of the university but not made available on public domain through World Wide Web. Details of OPAC facility offered by SAU libraries are furnished in Table-4. 6.3 Library Networking Networking is nothing but connecting two or a group of computers including the hardware, software using cables or other suitable tools and techniques to share the resources. Library networking refers to the networking of the computers available within the library and Local Area Network / Intranet of the University. Library networking within the library connects only the computers available in the library alone whereas the LAN connectivity, which usually connects all the departments of a campus, enables the users to access the library services over the LAN. The Intranet connects all the campuses of a university so that the library services can be utilized by all the campuses of the university. The particulars in respect of library networking are furnished in Table-2. 147
