created, revised and updated. This information exists in several formats and is created
for multiple purposes. Various kinds of information exist on the Internet which
comprises different levels of quality or reliability. It ranges from very high quality to
low quality and includes every shade in between. Identification, location and selection
of worthwhile and useful digital collections have become one of the important jobs of
modern professional librarians.
7. WORLD WIDE WEB
With the digital revolution, data and information can now be transmitted to all
corners of the world, and that is significant for almost all humanity, and it is
significant for libraries. The World Wide Web has many of the features of a digital
library, and if the web did not exist our conception of digital libraries would be very
different. The web is undoubtedly the means via which most digital libraries are
accessed, but it is not a digital library itself as it lacks characteristics of a digital
library. It is not a managed environment, it has no collection development principles
and most significant of all, the digital objects are not perceived as having durable
value. Librarians are always at the forefront of the latest technologies in order to find
new ways to optimize the management of libraries and resources, and to provide
improved services.
8. INFORMATION RETRIEVAL
The creation of large amounts of separate digital documents, which are then
stored in a document repository, has created an additional market for archiving and
retrieval systems. With the user community in mind the information retrieval
pathways should be designed. Search engines that can deal with unstructured data are
an important part of a KM solution. An organization be able to reach across
application boundaries to find information by using an integrated search tool.
Information retrieval plays an important role in knowledge management. The
issue is how a user can locate relevant information effectively and sufficiently high
quality to help in performing the task. The acquisition of knowledge can be got not
only by gathering existing knowledge within the organization, but also by acquiring
various sources, to fulfill a precise demand. The Internet has reduced the distances
between the providers and consumers of knowledge. It has opened up multiple
avenues for library and information centers to storage and organization of explicit
knowledge. The dissemination of such knowledge to the necessary point of action in
an organization is possible through multiple methods of electronic delivery systems.
Another form of information retrieval could be initiated by the system than by a user.
This is often called “Push technology”. Users can subscribe to areas of interest and
receive updated via email delivery.
9. IMPLEMENTATION
Intranet network based is accessible only by the organisation’s members,
employees allowed to interact with information. An intranet site often looks and acts
just like an Internet site.
