6.6 Electronic surveillance Libraries are not always safe and secure places and they are facing a wide variety of security concerns which includes the theft and mutilation of library materials. Therefore, the mission of a library includes library security which aims to protect the library resources by creating a secure and peaceful environment to enhance educational and professional pursuits of all those concerned with the library. Technology integration plays a vital role in this context and the librarians are making use of the technological advancements in this area. They are installing electronic security systems to overcome the security threats to a greater extent. These electronic security systems which typically provide burglar protection, collection security, access control and video surveillance are good examples for technology integration in libraries. The present survey revealed that out of eight SAU libraries, only the TANUVAS has established Electronic Video Surveillance facility in its central library. The other libraries are yet to establish such facilities. It is also observed that none of the SAU libraries covered by this study has established Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) system in the library which is highly essential in these days to prevent unethical losses suffered by the libraries. 7. CONCLUSION Establishing required digital infrastructure in libraries especially academic libraries is absolutely necessary and need of the hour to ensure optimum utilization of information resources available in the library. Keeping this in view, the study had been undertaken among the eight State Agricultural University Libraries in South India. The study revealed that almost all the eight libraries are equipped with required digital infrastructure except the two newly established viz., Sri Venkateswara Veterinary University, Tirupathi and Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fishery Sciences University, Bidar. Further, the study revealed that most of the digital infrastructure available in the libraries were procured under NATP, a World Bank funded project of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research. Thus, the role played by the ICAR in modernising the libraries of SAU libraries is really laudable. It is also suggested that the ICAR shall give priority for modernisation of the SAU and ICAR institute libraries under National Agricultural Innovation Project (NAIP), which is funded by the World Bank. 150
