<strong>Pulp</strong>, paper <strong>and</strong> paper products<br />
modules to exchange data via EDI, e.g. with customers <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> retail sector, where EDI is<br />
still widely used. The system will also enable <strong>the</strong> exchange of data <strong>in</strong> XML-based<br />
st<strong>and</strong>ards. When trad<strong>in</strong>g with paper <strong>and</strong> cardboard manufacturers, companies may have<br />
agreed to exchange data us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> papiNet® st<strong>and</strong>ard (see Section 4.1), which will<br />
normally also be enabled by <strong>the</strong> system.If companies decide to conduct e-bus<strong>in</strong>ess with<br />
each o<strong>the</strong>r via <strong>the</strong>ir ERP systems <strong>and</strong> us<strong>in</strong>g papiNet, an <strong>in</strong>itial mapp<strong>in</strong>g process has to<br />
take place to ensure that <strong>the</strong> systems "talk <strong>the</strong> same language". This will normally take a<br />
few days; some test orders <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>voices will be exchanged to see that <strong>the</strong> receiv<strong>in</strong>g<br />
system can read <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> way <strong>in</strong>tended by <strong>the</strong> sender (for example, to check<br />
if <strong>the</strong> "address" is also understood to be an "address" by <strong>the</strong> receiver).<br />
The exchange of order-related data <strong>in</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ardised electronic format is <strong>the</strong> most common<br />
form of e-bus<strong>in</strong>ess between large firms or between large <strong>and</strong> medium-sized firms <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
P&P <strong>in</strong>dustry. The bus<strong>in</strong>ess example of Karl Knauer KG / COPACO Group (see follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />
box) is a typical example. The case study on Stora Enso (Section 4.1) also confirms <strong>the</strong><br />
"primacy of ERP" for e-bus<strong>in</strong>ess exchanges.<br />

COPACO Group<br />
Karl Knauer KG <strong>in</strong> Biberach, Germany, is a producer of <strong>in</strong>novative<br />
packag<strong>in</strong>g solutions. The company employs about 400 people <strong>and</strong> is part of<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational COPACO Group, a European cooperation of mostly<br />
medium-sized producers of cardboard packag<strong>in</strong>g solutions. In 2005, <strong>the</strong><br />
group employed about 1900 people <strong>and</strong> had a turnover of about 258 million<br />
euros. Customers are ma<strong>in</strong>ly companies from <strong>the</strong> food & beverages <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
pharmaceutical & healthcare <strong>in</strong>dustries (about 70% of revenue).<br />
A few years ago, COPACO adopted <strong>the</strong> strategy of st<strong>and</strong>ardis<strong>in</strong>g based on<br />
<strong>the</strong> papiNet® st<strong>and</strong>ard as much as possible, its data exchanges with<br />
producers, customers <strong>and</strong> suppliers. In this framework, Karl Knauer AG<br />
digitally <strong>in</strong>tegrated bus<strong>in</strong>ess processes with cardboard producer Mayr-<br />
Melnhof (Vienna), one of <strong>the</strong>ir major material suppliers, by implement<strong>in</strong>g a<br />
system for st<strong>and</strong>ardised data exchange (us<strong>in</strong>g papiNet®). The company<br />
selected Seeburger AG to realise <strong>the</strong> system <strong>in</strong>tegration. The case served<br />
as a pilot for <strong>the</strong> whole COPACO group.<br />
The ma<strong>in</strong> hub for <strong>the</strong> data exchange is a Seeburger <strong>Bus<strong>in</strong>ess</strong> Integration<br />
Server (BIS). Data are transmitted via <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternet <strong>in</strong> XML format. BIS<br />
connects specific modules of <strong>the</strong> ERP systems of <strong>the</strong> participat<strong>in</strong>g<br />
companies, as well as certa<strong>in</strong> legacy systems <strong>and</strong> programmes. In this way,<br />
most of <strong>the</strong> former paper-based documention exchange has been converted<br />
to electronic data exchange.<br />
Accord<strong>in</strong>g to Richard Kammerer, Manag<strong>in</strong>g Director of Karl Knauer KG, <strong>the</strong><br />
process <strong>in</strong>tegration based on BIS has improved supply-cha<strong>in</strong> management<br />
by accelerat<strong>in</strong>g processes <strong>and</strong> reduc<strong>in</strong>g error rates. This, he concluded, is "a<br />
w<strong>in</strong>-w<strong>in</strong> situation for all parties <strong>in</strong>volved – supplier, producer <strong>and</strong> customers".<br />
