Abstract<br />
<strong>Bus<strong>in</strong>ess</strong> growth has compelled International <strong>Paper</strong>, a worldwide leader <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> manufacture<br />
of paper <strong>and</strong> packag<strong>in</strong>g solutions, to look for new ways to <strong>in</strong>crease operational<br />
efficiency <strong>and</strong> to improve customer service. To achieve <strong>the</strong>se goals, <strong>the</strong> company<br />
decided to implement an RFID based tag <strong>and</strong> reader system as <strong>the</strong> basis of a new<br />
warehouse track<strong>in</strong>g system. The <strong>in</strong>tegration of <strong>the</strong> new system with exist<strong>in</strong>g production<br />
processes at a mill <strong>in</strong> Texarkana, Texas, resulted <strong>in</strong> noticeable improvements <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
efficiency of <strong>in</strong>ventory h<strong>and</strong>l<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

International <strong>Paper</strong> is <strong>the</strong> world’s largest paper <strong>and</strong> forest products company. Their<br />
factories produce a wide selection of paper products for pr<strong>in</strong>ted communication, as well<br />
as corrugated shipp<strong>in</strong>g products for food <strong>and</strong> beverage packag<strong>in</strong>g. The company<br />
operates 36 pulp, paper <strong>and</strong> packag<strong>in</strong>g mills, 132 convert<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> packag<strong>in</strong>g plants, 35<br />
wood products facilities, 13 specialty chemicals plants, <strong>and</strong> 2 specialty panels <strong>and</strong><br />

The Texarkana, Texas mill <strong>and</strong> warehouse supports approximately one hundred different<br />
customers with a range of paper products of different weights <strong>and</strong> sizes. Although <strong>the</strong> mill<br />
was already perform<strong>in</strong>g well, International <strong>Paper</strong> executives felt that <strong>the</strong> number of<br />
products <strong>and</strong> daily transactions <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> warehouse offered opportunity for improvement,<br />
<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y were not satisfied with <strong>the</strong> results of o<strong>the</strong>r solutions, such as bar cod<strong>in</strong>g<br />
