<strong>Pulp</strong>, paper <strong>and</strong> paper products<br />

different production steps, are created automatically. Order management modules display<br />

an <strong>in</strong>-depth view of all related order <strong>in</strong>formation such as <strong>the</strong> current status, <strong>the</strong> history of<br />

what has happened with <strong>the</strong> order, which form pallets have been produced when, by<br />

whom <strong>and</strong> based on which mo<strong>the</strong>r reels. This <strong>in</strong>formation is available later on for<br />

backtrack<strong>in</strong>g over <strong>the</strong> various production steps on batch-level.<br />

Plann<strong>in</strong>g: The NPT plann<strong>in</strong>g mechanisms are based on <strong>the</strong> requested delivery date of<br />

customer orders <strong>and</strong> a production calendar (shifts, planned downtimes etc.). Production<br />

plans are optimised by merg<strong>in</strong>g similar orders (e.g. colour, grade, grammage 87 ,<br />

packag<strong>in</strong>g material) for a certa<strong>in</strong> mach<strong>in</strong>e l<strong>in</strong>e for outmost mach<strong>in</strong>e-efficiency (prevent<br />

change-over-costs <strong>and</strong> waste). Ano<strong>the</strong>r step of <strong>the</strong> production plann<strong>in</strong>g is to plan <strong>the</strong> just<strong>in</strong>-time-delivery<br />

of all needed <strong>in</strong>put-material (Bill of Material) for production. Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore,<br />

<strong>the</strong> plann<strong>in</strong>g modules allow lead-time calculation <strong>and</strong> detailed capacity plann<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Production management supports <strong>the</strong> execution of production plans by usage of onl<strong>in</strong>e<br />

work-order management. All mach<strong>in</strong>e-events (production, changeover, waste, st<strong>and</strong>stills)<br />

are tracked <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> production management.<br />

Warehouse management: The warehouse module provides lifecycle management for<br />

<strong>in</strong>ventoried materials (mo<strong>the</strong>r reels, semi-f<strong>in</strong>ished <strong>and</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ished form pallets, pack<strong>in</strong>g<br />

material). This functionality can be extended by <strong>the</strong> use of specialised sub modules for<br />

(a) packag<strong>in</strong>g materials, (b) item search, (c) RFID, <strong>and</strong> (d) transport.<br />

Bill of material (BoM) h<strong>and</strong>l<strong>in</strong>g: Hierarchical BoMs provide <strong>in</strong>formation about <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>ventoried <strong>and</strong> non-<strong>in</strong>ventoried components used to fulfil a production order. These data<br />

are vital for identify<strong>in</strong>g, rat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> comb<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> necessary semi-f<strong>in</strong>ished <strong>and</strong> packag<strong>in</strong>g<br />

materials for detailed plann<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> production management.<br />

The warehouse management module is based on radio frequency identification (RFID)<br />

system technology placed on both stationary <strong>and</strong> mobile readers fixed on staplers. By<br />

this, <strong>the</strong> firm built a general-purpose technology <strong>in</strong> order to support item search <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

transport system. In practice, forklift drivers <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> mills now receive transport orders to<br />

deliver <strong>the</strong> crates from <strong>the</strong> storage area to <strong>the</strong> packag<strong>in</strong>g mach<strong>in</strong>es on an item-per-item<br />

basis. The drivers not only drive <strong>the</strong> goods but also h<strong>and</strong>-scan barcodes on <strong>the</strong> crates to<br />

trigger <strong>the</strong> new RFID-based track<strong>in</strong>g system (parcel data are transmitted via Wireless<br />

LAN (Local Area Network) to <strong>the</strong> storage management system). The ma<strong>in</strong> advantage of<br />

this onl<strong>in</strong>e-supported parcel delivery system lies <strong>in</strong> improved process <strong>and</strong> parcel control.<br />

When <strong>in</strong>terviewed, firm representatives identified <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g benefits of <strong>the</strong> usage of<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stalled RFID-based NPT system: more accurate production plann<strong>in</strong>g, just-<strong>in</strong>-time<br />

delivery to production l<strong>in</strong>es, exact book<strong>in</strong>g of orders, lower search costs of items,<br />

improved <strong>in</strong>com<strong>in</strong>g orders control, better <strong>in</strong>ventory management, as well as better control<br />

of supply cha<strong>in</strong> data <strong>and</strong> data track<strong>in</strong>g of produced paper rolls from <strong>the</strong> mill to <strong>the</strong><br />

warehouse <strong>and</strong> on to <strong>the</strong> carrier.<br />

The firm’s IT developer added <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g system benefits: “At <strong>the</strong> time of <strong>the</strong> project<br />

start, <strong>the</strong>re was no consistent data track<strong>in</strong>g application for manag<strong>in</strong>g data coord<strong>in</strong>ation at<br />

<strong>the</strong> production l<strong>in</strong>es. The new NPT system, however, offers a user-friendly web-browser-<br />
