Use of <strong>ICT</strong> for e-procurement processes<br />

As <strong>in</strong> 2005, e-<strong>Bus<strong>in</strong>ess</strong> W@tch asked companies whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>y "support <strong>the</strong> selection of<br />

suppliers or procurement processes by specific <strong>ICT</strong> solutions." The rationale for this<br />

question was to fur<strong>the</strong>r test whe<strong>the</strong>r electronic procurement is <strong>in</strong> fact a systematic <strong>and</strong><br />

digitally <strong>in</strong>tegrated process <strong>in</strong> a firm, or ra<strong>the</strong>r an occasional bus<strong>in</strong>ess activity without<br />

much significance for <strong>the</strong> overall bus<strong>in</strong>ess.<br />

In 2006, only about 8% of firms (represent<strong>in</strong>g about 14% of sector employment) <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

P&P <strong>in</strong>dustry reported <strong>the</strong> use of software solutions or <strong>in</strong>ternet-based services for e-<br />

procurement (see Exhibit 3-22). This shows that <strong>the</strong>re is a massive gap between <strong>the</strong><br />

percentage of companies plac<strong>in</strong>g at least some orders onl<strong>in</strong>e (~50%) <strong>and</strong> those that use<br />

special software for this (~8%). It can be assumed that companies without such software<br />

place orders ma<strong>in</strong>ly through websites or extranets of suppliers, which does not require<br />

any special e-procurement system. The digital back-office <strong>in</strong>tegration of procurement<br />

related processes (all <strong>the</strong> way from order<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> receipt of goods / services) is probably<br />

not <strong>in</strong> advanced state <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se cases.<br />

It is <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g to observe that <strong>the</strong> percentage of firms with special <strong>ICT</strong> systems for e-<br />

procurement equals about half of those firms with an ERP system, throughout <strong>the</strong> sizeb<strong>and</strong>s.<br />

It appears that about every second firm with an ERP system has taken <strong>the</strong> next<br />

step to add a module or <strong>in</strong>terface for B2B <strong>in</strong>tegration with suppliers.<br />
