<strong>Pulp</strong>, paper <strong>and</strong> paper products<br />

keeps track of emissions <strong>in</strong> order to help <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry meet quotas <strong>and</strong> m<strong>in</strong>imise pollution.<br />

Ano<strong>the</strong>r potential development is to l<strong>in</strong>k Mikon LIMS to <strong>the</strong> feed<strong>in</strong>g mechanism of <strong>the</strong><br />

paper mach<strong>in</strong>es <strong>in</strong> order to automatically update <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>put levels of chemicals.<br />

ChemSource<br />

Ano<strong>the</strong>r e-bus<strong>in</strong>ess tool that supports production processes is ChemSource, provided by<br />

Swedish STFI. NP uses it to have a constant overview of <strong>the</strong> chemicals that are stored <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> mill. The suppliers of chemicals pre-report <strong>the</strong>ir NP-deliveries to STFI, <strong>in</strong> order to<br />

have it checked aga<strong>in</strong>st chemical legislation <strong>and</strong> health requirements. Nordic <strong>Paper</strong> <strong>the</strong>n<br />

has immediate onl<strong>in</strong>e access to <strong>in</strong>formation about <strong>the</strong> chemicals used <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> plant, which<br />

is important <strong>in</strong> case of an accident or a fire. “For example, ChemSource proved useful<br />

when one of our co-workers had accidentally <strong>in</strong>gested chemicals of unknown nature.<br />

Thanks to <strong>the</strong> onl<strong>in</strong>e system we could acquire <strong>in</strong>stant <strong>in</strong>formation about <strong>the</strong>se chemicals<br />

<strong>and</strong> he could be given swift <strong>and</strong> accurate treatment”, says F<strong>in</strong>n Solgård.<br />

The implementation of Semtracker <strong>and</strong> Mikon has helped NP to substantially improve<br />

order<strong>in</strong>g, production <strong>and</strong> distribution processes, which are runn<strong>in</strong>g smoo<strong>the</strong>r compared to<br />

<strong>the</strong> time when manual systems were used. Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore, <strong>the</strong>se <strong>ICT</strong> systems have helped<br />

NP to fulfil <strong>the</strong> ISO 9000 quality st<strong>and</strong>ards. The ma<strong>in</strong> positive effects experienced from<br />

us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>se systems are <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

Reduced adm<strong>in</strong>istrative costs by us<strong>in</strong>g Semtracker for logistics, <strong>in</strong>voic<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />

customer service;<br />

The chemical control built <strong>in</strong>to Mikon has contributed to an approximate decrease<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> use of silicone by 10 %<br />

Increased customer satisfaction, as <strong>the</strong> ratio of bad quality paper reach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

customer has dim<strong>in</strong>ished. Most of <strong>the</strong> times <strong>the</strong> Mikon system helps NP to detect<br />

flaws <strong>in</strong> production already <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> mill, <strong>and</strong> paper can be recycled <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong><br />

production cha<strong>in</strong> before be<strong>in</strong>g delivered to <strong>the</strong> customer;<br />

The use of <strong>the</strong> two systems for quality control has led to a better use of<br />

resources.<br />

F<strong>in</strong>n Solgård, Quality Manager at NP, describes <strong>the</strong> process of <strong>in</strong>stall<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>ICT</strong> systems<br />

at <strong>the</strong> NP mill <strong>in</strong> Greåker as relatively pa<strong>in</strong>less. He stresses <strong>the</strong> benefit of keep<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

close contact with <strong>the</strong> supplier (Mikon) not only dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> implementation, but also<br />

afterwards. This enables NP to improve <strong>and</strong> update <strong>the</strong> use of <strong>the</strong> quality system <strong>and</strong> to<br />

discuss <strong>the</strong> implementation of additional components <strong>and</strong> systems.<br />
