<strong>Pulp</strong>, paper <strong>and</strong> paper products<br />

At first, VPK reacted to this challenge by <strong>in</strong>troduc<strong>in</strong>g many flexibility measures <strong>in</strong> its<br />

production process <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g bl<strong>in</strong>d stock buffer<strong>in</strong>g, result<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> huge hold<strong>in</strong>g costs, high<br />

adm<strong>in</strong>istration costs <strong>and</strong>, more often than not, <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>vestments <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> wrong stock.<br />

Moreover, <strong>the</strong> high number of rush orders did not fade away. As a result, VPK Packag<strong>in</strong>g<br />

performed poorly <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> eyes of <strong>the</strong> customer.<br />

The strategic response: Forward Logistic Integration<br />

To overcome this crisis, VPK decided <strong>in</strong> 2000 to make a substantial <strong>in</strong>vestment <strong>in</strong><br />

improv<strong>in</strong>g its supply cha<strong>in</strong> management <strong>and</strong> to launch Forward Logistics Integration<br />

(FLI®) for this purpose.<br />

Forward Logistic Integration is a trademarked service VPK is offer<strong>in</strong>g to its customers,<br />

whereby it is <strong>in</strong>tended to atta<strong>in</strong> a strategic collaboration with <strong>the</strong> customer by <strong>the</strong><br />

exchange of <strong>in</strong>formation. The concept fits perfectly <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess strategy of VPK to<br />

move from a product-oriented to a customer-oriented approach. FLI® service <strong>in</strong>cludes <strong>the</strong><br />

follow<strong>in</strong>g aspects:<br />

detailed track<strong>in</strong>g of customer’s specific stock hold<strong>in</strong>gs (<strong>in</strong>-house <strong>and</strong> with <strong>the</strong><br />

customer, better known as Vendor Managed Inventories)<br />

optimis<strong>in</strong>g customer’s orders<br />

order plann<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong> customer<br />

periodic analysis of stock needs evolution<br />

By exchang<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>formation with respect to <strong>the</strong> plann<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> stock level, VPK aims at<br />

optimis<strong>in</strong>g both <strong>the</strong>ir own supply cha<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> that of <strong>the</strong>ir customers (mostly B2B). In<br />

essence, FLI® creates a virtual organisation, characterized by openness on <strong>the</strong> supply<br />

cha<strong>in</strong> from both sides (see Exhibit 1).<br />

To make FLI® work, a trusted, open relationship between <strong>the</strong> company <strong>and</strong> its customers<br />

is needed whereby <strong>in</strong>formation can be shared <strong>in</strong> both directions. More concretely, VPK<br />

needs data on <strong>the</strong> customer's MRP (material requirement plann<strong>in</strong>g), cover<strong>in</strong>g previous<br />

two weeks, a forecast of <strong>the</strong> com<strong>in</strong>g 13 weeks <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> amount of items <strong>in</strong> stock. In<br />

exchange, VPK promises to optimise <strong>the</strong> customer’s stock <strong>and</strong> dem<strong>and</strong>, while improv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> delivery reliability.<br />
