In many cases, <strong>the</strong> implementation of e-bus<strong>in</strong>ess processes <strong>in</strong> a company will constitute<br />

a process <strong>in</strong>novation <strong>in</strong> itself. In manufactur<strong>in</strong>g sectors, e-bus<strong>in</strong>ess has triggered<br />

significant <strong>in</strong>novation <strong>in</strong>side <strong>the</strong> companies, notably <strong>in</strong> supply cha<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> delivery processes,<br />

such as automatic stock replenish<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> improved logistics. In service sectors<br />

such as tourism, <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>novative element is more evident <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> way that external transactions<br />

are accomplished. For example, if a company starts to sell its services onl<strong>in</strong>e, this<br />

can imply <strong>in</strong>novation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> service delivery process <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> customer communication.<br />

In some sectors, particularly <strong>in</strong> <strong>ICT</strong> manufactur<strong>in</strong>g, consumer electronics <strong>and</strong><br />

telecommunications, <strong>ICT</strong> are also highly relevant for product <strong>in</strong>novation.<br />

However, as more companies strive to exploit <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>novation potential of <strong>ICT</strong>, it becomes<br />

more difficult for <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual company to directly ga<strong>in</strong> competitive advantage from this<br />

technology. e-<strong>Bus<strong>in</strong>ess</strong> is becom<strong>in</strong>g a necessity ra<strong>the</strong>r than a means to differentiate from<br />

competitors. 16 In addition, <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>troduction of <strong>in</strong>novation can cause substantial costs <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> short <strong>and</strong> medium term, as it may take time before <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>vestments pay off. This<br />

causes challenges <strong>in</strong> particular for small <strong>and</strong> medium-sized companies. It is one of <strong>the</strong><br />

reasons why e-<strong>Bus<strong>in</strong>ess</strong> W@tch focuses on such challenges <strong>in</strong> its sector studies (see<br />

also ‘Policy Background’ <strong>in</strong> chapter 1.1).<br />
