4.1 papiNet® – a Success Story <strong>in</strong> e-St<strong>and</strong>ards 62<br />
The follow<strong>in</strong>g section conta<strong>in</strong>s – <strong>in</strong>evitably for a discussion of technical issues such as<br />
electronic st<strong>and</strong>ards – a lot of technical terms <strong>and</strong> acronyms. A glossary with brief<br />
explanations of <strong>the</strong> most important terms is <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> Annex III of this study.<br />
4.1.1 Introduction<br />
papiNet® 63 is a global paper <strong>and</strong> forest products <strong>in</strong>dustry e-bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>in</strong>itiative. It is <strong>the</strong><br />
product of a not-for-profit cooperative <strong>in</strong>ternational <strong>in</strong>itiative of papiNet® GIE, IDEAlliance,<br />
<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> American Forest & <strong>Paper</strong> Association. The objectives of <strong>the</strong> cooperative are to<br />
develop, ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>, <strong>and</strong> support <strong>the</strong> implementation of a s<strong>in</strong>gle set of XML based global<br />
electronic bus<strong>in</strong>ess transaction st<strong>and</strong>ards for parties engaged <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> buy<strong>in</strong>g, sell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />
distribution of forest <strong>and</strong> paper products. Where possible, papiNet® also aims to align<br />
itself with o<strong>the</strong>r st<strong>and</strong>ards <strong>and</strong> to give assistance to implementation work.<br />
The papiNet® st<strong>and</strong>ard is a s<strong>in</strong>gle complete st<strong>and</strong>ard. It is developed <strong>and</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed by<br />
customers, suppliers <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r trad<strong>in</strong>g partners <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> paper <strong>and</strong> forest <strong>in</strong>dustry<br />
<strong>in</strong> order to improve <strong>the</strong> efficiency <strong>and</strong> accuracy of transactions throughout <strong>the</strong> paper<br />
supply cha<strong>in</strong>, while reduc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> cost of operations. To facilitate implementation,<br />
papiNet® recommends a company to identify its bus<strong>in</strong>ess segments <strong>and</strong> follow <strong>the</strong><br />
appropriate segment implementation guidel<strong>in</strong>es.<br />
The st<strong>and</strong>ard is relevant for all companies <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> forest <strong>and</strong> paper products supply cha<strong>in</strong>.<br />
In addition, many aspects of <strong>the</strong> strengths of its organisation <strong>and</strong> its processes have<br />
strong potential for similar cooperative developments <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r sectors. The lack of a<br />
certification structure is not necessarily a weakness, but does allow for divergence.<br />
4.1.2 The organisation of papiNet<br />
Over 60 customers, producers, <strong>and</strong> technology firms from Europe <strong>and</strong> North America are<br />
<strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>itiative with <strong>in</strong>dustry association partners – CEPI, American Forest <strong>and</strong><br />
<strong>Paper</strong> Association, <strong>and</strong> IDEAlliance.<br />
The papiNet® Executive Committee is <strong>the</strong> global advisory <strong>and</strong> coord<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g body of<br />
papiNet. It provides direction <strong>and</strong> sets policy with regard to <strong>the</strong> strategic priorities of <strong>the</strong><br />
papiNet® organisation, st<strong>and</strong>ard, budget <strong>and</strong> allocation of resources. This is performed <strong>in</strong><br />
close coord<strong>in</strong>ation with <strong>the</strong> govern<strong>in</strong>g boards of papiNet® Europe GIE <strong>and</strong> papiNet® NA<br />
(North America). Both of <strong>the</strong>se groups are chartered to encourage <strong>and</strong> facilitate<br />
implementation of <strong>the</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ard through support<strong>in</strong>g tools <strong>and</strong> guidel<strong>in</strong>es, market segment<br />
implementation groups, <strong>and</strong> related publicity.<br />
The Central Work Group manages <strong>the</strong> content of <strong>the</strong> papiNet® st<strong>and</strong>ard. It is focused<br />
on promot<strong>in</strong>g adoption, implementation <strong>and</strong> use of <strong>the</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ard, ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ard<br />
