faster compared to <strong>the</strong> often cumbersome h<strong>and</strong>l<strong>in</strong>g of pr<strong>in</strong>ted <strong>in</strong>voices. The cost sav<strong>in</strong>g<br />
potential obviously depends on <strong>the</strong> number of <strong>in</strong>voices that have to be processed;<br />
companies <strong>and</strong> sectors differ widely <strong>in</strong> this respect.<br />
Current state of adoption<br />
e-Invoic<strong>in</strong>g can ei<strong>the</strong>r be accomplished <strong>in</strong> a web-based environment, or processes can<br />
be <strong>in</strong>tegrated with <strong>the</strong> ERP system of a company. ERP-based systems (which are used <strong>in</strong><br />
B2B e-<strong>in</strong>voic<strong>in</strong>g) promise <strong>the</strong> highest cost-sav<strong>in</strong>g potential for companies. The broad<br />
<strong>in</strong>stalled base of ERP systems <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> P&P <strong>in</strong>dustry could thus provide a solid basis for<br />
wide adoption of e-<strong>in</strong>voic<strong>in</strong>g, at least among medium-sized <strong>and</strong> large firms.<br />
The survey results partially confirm this assumption. e-Invoic<strong>in</strong>g is used about as much<br />
as <strong>in</strong> most o<strong>the</strong>r manufactur<strong>in</strong>g sectors with a similar ERP adoption rate. In <strong>the</strong> P&P<br />
<strong>in</strong>dustry, firms represent<strong>in</strong>g close to 20% of employment are now send<strong>in</strong>g e-<strong>in</strong>voices<br />
(ei<strong>the</strong>r to customers <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> public sector <strong>and</strong> / or <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> private sector), <strong>and</strong> 25% say that<br />
<strong>the</strong>y receive e-<strong>in</strong>voices from suppliers (see Exhibit 3-19). F<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs are very similar for<br />
food <strong>and</strong> beverages, <strong>ICT</strong> manufactur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> for <strong>the</strong> shipbuild<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> repair <strong>in</strong>dustry (see<br />
Exhibit 3-20). This is ano<strong>the</strong>r example confirm<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> overall impression aris<strong>in</strong>g from this<br />
survey that <strong>the</strong>re is a certa<strong>in</strong> alignment of most of <strong>the</strong> manufactur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustries as<br />
regards <strong>the</strong> state of play <strong>in</strong> e-bus<strong>in</strong>ess. The P&P <strong>in</strong>dustry is <strong>in</strong> many ways <strong>the</strong> perfect<br />
yardstick of what constitutes state-of-<strong>the</strong>-art <strong>ICT</strong> use <strong>in</strong> manufactur<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
