an ERP system nor a special account<strong>in</strong>g software. Very small companies often h<strong>and</strong>le<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir account<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> plann<strong>in</strong>g by means of self-created spreadsheet solutions. It is hard<br />

to expla<strong>in</strong>, however, why 10% of medium-sized <strong>and</strong> even 4% of large firms report nei<strong>the</strong>r<br />

us<strong>in</strong>g an ERP system nor an account<strong>in</strong>g software.<br />

Special software systems for EDM (electronic document management) are rarely used<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> P&P <strong>in</strong>dustry, as <strong>in</strong> most of <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r sectors. These software systems are typically<br />

used to archive <strong>and</strong> manage documents of any type <strong>in</strong> digital format; this is highly<br />

relevant for example <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>surance <strong>in</strong>dustry (management of <strong>in</strong>surance policies), <strong>and</strong> to<br />

a lesser extent <strong>in</strong> manufactur<strong>in</strong>g enterprises.<br />

However, EDM is an important <strong>and</strong> grow<strong>in</strong>g product segment with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> software <strong>in</strong>dustry,<br />

which is also <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly develop<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry specific solutions, also for manufacturers.<br />

The ma<strong>in</strong> software applications <strong>in</strong> this field can be grouped as DMS <strong>and</strong> ECM systems.<br />

The more traditional DMS (Document Management Systems) are used for systematically<br />

archiv<strong>in</strong>g documents. The more recent concept of ECM (Enterprise Content Management)<br />

goes beyond DMS, as it also covers <strong>in</strong>formation objects (e.g. database systems)<br />

<strong>and</strong> not only <strong>in</strong>dividual documents. In manufactur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> retail sectors, document<br />

management can be important fort he digital <strong>in</strong>tegration of order<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> sales processes.<br />

Typically, EDM systems are <strong>in</strong>tegrated <strong>in</strong>to ERP systems <strong>in</strong> form of sector specific<br />

modules.<br />

3.4.2 Use of <strong>ICT</strong> for cooperative <strong>and</strong> collaborative bus<strong>in</strong>ess processes<br />

<strong>ICT</strong> tools can support <strong>the</strong> cooperation of companies <strong>in</strong> supply cha<strong>in</strong> processes; both<br />

cooperation <strong>in</strong> production processes with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same l<strong>in</strong>k of <strong>the</strong> supply cha<strong>in</strong>, <strong>and</strong> at <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>terface between different l<strong>in</strong>ks. The value system <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> P&P <strong>in</strong>dustry <strong>in</strong>volves<br />

companies from <strong>the</strong> forestry <strong>and</strong> woodwork<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustries, sawmills, pulp <strong>and</strong> paper<br />

manufacturers, paper convert<strong>in</strong>g companies <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> publish<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry.<br />

Supply cha<strong>in</strong> processes consists of discrete value add<strong>in</strong>g activities that are <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly<br />

organised <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>tegrated production networks with<strong>in</strong> this <strong>in</strong>dustry cluster (see also Exhibit<br />

2-2 <strong>in</strong> section 2.1).<br />

The diffusion of <strong>ICT</strong> tools for onl<strong>in</strong>e cooperation <strong>and</strong> collaboration 50 <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> P&P value<br />

system compares favourably to <strong>the</strong> situation <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r manufactur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustries. About<br />

10% of all P&P firms say <strong>the</strong>y use onl<strong>in</strong>e tools for collaborative design ("e-design") with<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r companies. Among large firms, <strong>the</strong> figure goes up close to 30% (see Exhibit 3-17).<br />

In most o<strong>the</strong>r manufactur<strong>in</strong>g sectors, figures are quite similar. There is some doubt,<br />

however, whe<strong>the</strong>r collaborative e-design activities are really so widely diffused <strong>in</strong> various<br />

<strong>in</strong>dustries; it is difficult to draw a clear borderl<strong>in</strong>e here as to which software applications<br />

<strong>and</strong> which practices are <strong>in</strong>cluded or not. The same applies to some of <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

applications presented here; figures should <strong>the</strong>refore be used <strong>in</strong>dicatively.<br />

"Cooperation" means splitt<strong>in</strong>g a common, centrally managed task <strong>in</strong>to sub-tasks which are<br />

performed by different partners of <strong>the</strong> cooperation. "Collaboration" means that several partners<br />

work toge<strong>the</strong>r on <strong>the</strong> same task at <strong>the</strong> same time.<br />
