Abstract<br />

The Mayr-Melnhof Cartonboard Group (MMK), headquartered <strong>in</strong> Vienna, is a lead<strong>in</strong>g<br />

producer of recycled cartonboard with<strong>in</strong> Europe <strong>and</strong> world-wide. As a vital part of its<br />

strategy, <strong>the</strong> company lays emphasis on develop<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g last<strong>in</strong>g bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

relations with clients as well as suppliers. This case study shows how MMK uses <strong>ICT</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

e-bus<strong>in</strong>ess deliberately as <strong>in</strong>struments to support this strategic goal. The case focuses on<br />

a web-based workplace ("coMMunity"), which was ma<strong>in</strong>ly implemented as a service for<br />

smaller companies with whom MM is <strong>in</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess. It illustrates how onl<strong>in</strong>e services of this<br />

type can support B2B trade processes <strong>in</strong> a w<strong>in</strong>-w<strong>in</strong> situation, with a high chance of<br />

creat<strong>in</strong>g value for both parties <strong>in</strong>volved.<br />

The Mayr-Melnhof Cartonboard Group (MMK) is a lead<strong>in</strong>g producer 79 of recycled<br />

cartonboard with<strong>in</strong> Europe <strong>and</strong> world-wide. It is part of <strong>the</strong> Mayr-Melnhof Group, which is<br />

listed on <strong>the</strong> Vienna Stock Exchange <strong>and</strong> consists of two divisions: <strong>the</strong> Cartonboard<br />

Group <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Packag<strong>in</strong>g Group. In total, <strong>the</strong> MM Group employs about 7,300 people,<br />

3,000 of whom work <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cartonboard Group.<br />

"Grammage" is a measure of paper weight based on <strong>the</strong> same square meter sheet of paper,<br />
