Collaborative forecast<strong>in</strong>g of dem<strong>and</strong> is ano<strong>the</strong>r example. There are quite sophisticated<br />

tools for calculat<strong>in</strong>g dem<strong>and</strong>, determ<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> amount <strong>and</strong> time of production <strong>and</strong> thus <strong>the</strong><br />

dem<strong>and</strong> for various <strong>in</strong>puts (supply goods), storage capacity <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r services. Aga<strong>in</strong>,<br />

figures for <strong>the</strong> adoption of related systems <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> P&P <strong>in</strong>dustry are similar to those<br />

reported from o<strong>the</strong>r manufactur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustries (see Exhibit 3-18), <strong>and</strong> to those for<br />

collaborative design. As a rule of thumb, companies represent<strong>in</strong>g about 20% of<br />

employment <strong>in</strong> a manufactur<strong>in</strong>g sector report <strong>the</strong> use of <strong>the</strong>se applications. In<br />

construction, for comparison, <strong>the</strong> adoption rate is about 10-15%.<br />

Systems for manag<strong>in</strong>g capacity <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>ventory onl<strong>in</strong>e tend to be more widely diffused<br />

than those for e-design <strong>and</strong> dem<strong>and</strong> forecast<strong>in</strong>g. In particular <strong>in</strong> sectors where logistics is<br />

an important cost factor <strong>and</strong> service criteria, e.g. <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> P&P <strong>in</strong>dustry, <strong>the</strong> adequate use of<br />

<strong>ICT</strong> to support logistics processes can be an important strategic issue. 51<br />
