CASE STUDY: NORDIC PAPER, NORWAY<br />
Abstract<br />
Nordic <strong>Paper</strong> <strong>in</strong> Greåker, Norway is <strong>the</strong> world’s largest producer of greaseproof paper.<br />
S<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> late 1990s, <strong>the</strong> company has been us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> computer-based track<strong>in</strong>g system<br />
"Semtracker" to have a complete overview of logistic <strong>in</strong>formation about <strong>the</strong>ir products <strong>and</strong><br />
orders. In 2004, Nordic <strong>Paper</strong> l<strong>in</strong>ked <strong>the</strong> lab analysis-tool Mikon LIMS with Semtracker <strong>in</strong><br />
order to fur<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation transparency across production <strong>and</strong> logistics<br />
processes: <strong>the</strong> new system provides <strong>the</strong> company with real-time electronic <strong>in</strong>formation<br />
about <strong>the</strong> quality of <strong>the</strong> paper <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> levels of chemicals <strong>in</strong> it.<br />

Background <strong>and</strong> objectives<br />
Nordic <strong>Paper</strong> (NP) is a Sc<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>avian paper group operat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Norway <strong>and</strong> Sweden. It is<br />
<strong>the</strong> world’s largest manufacturer of greaseproof paper, which is used, for example, for<br />
bak<strong>in</strong>g paper, bak<strong>in</strong>g cups <strong>and</strong> barrier paper (that is used as isolation <strong>in</strong> conta<strong>in</strong>ers <strong>and</strong><br />
packages). NP manufactures <strong>the</strong> paper <strong>and</strong> customers convert it <strong>in</strong>to a variation of<br />
products. The company’s market share of grease paper is estimated to more than 20%<br />
worldwide. The <strong>in</strong>tra-market competition is quite stable with a slight decrease <strong>in</strong><br />
competitors over <strong>the</strong> past few years. Never<strong>the</strong>less, NP products are fac<strong>in</strong>g tough<br />
competition from o<strong>the</strong>r materials that can be used for <strong>the</strong> same purposes, such as<br />
alum<strong>in</strong>ium <strong>and</strong> plastic.<br />
The NP paper mill <strong>in</strong> Greåker has 130 employees that operate two paper mach<strong>in</strong>es with a<br />
yearly capacity of 30,000 tons. It is an on dem<strong>and</strong> production, with paper rolls go<strong>in</strong>g<br />
directly to shipment. No larger stor<strong>in</strong>g facilities are used.<br />
Until eight years ago, NP processed <strong>in</strong>com<strong>in</strong>g orders manually, us<strong>in</strong>g a system of<br />
Microsoft Excel spreadsheets to keep track of <strong>the</strong>se orders. In <strong>the</strong> late 1990s, when more<br />
sophisticated <strong>ICT</strong> systems started to become widespread <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry, Nordic <strong>Paper</strong><br />
decided to implement a new system <strong>in</strong> order to automate <strong>the</strong> process<strong>in</strong>g of orders <strong>and</strong> to<br />
<strong>in</strong>crease <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternal transparency of bus<strong>in</strong>ess processes. NP decided to deploy <strong>the</strong><br />
Semtracker production management system, provided by ABB. The system was <strong>in</strong>tended<br />
to give each roll an electronic identity so that operators <strong>and</strong> adm<strong>in</strong>istration would be able<br />
to track it through all stages of <strong>the</strong> distribution cha<strong>in</strong>. Later on, <strong>the</strong> lab-analysis tool Mikon<br />
was <strong>in</strong>tegrated with Semtracker.<br />
