4.1.5 Success factors<br />
The primary success factors <strong>in</strong> papiNet’s emergence as <strong>the</strong> global e-bus<strong>in</strong>ess st<strong>and</strong>ard<br />
for <strong>the</strong> P&P <strong>in</strong>dustry relate to<br />
decentralised development <strong>and</strong> implementation, focus<strong>in</strong>g on key market<br />
segments <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> region <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir specific semantic issues,<br />
clear messag<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>teroperability strategy supported by a strong basis <strong>in</strong> stable<br />
message st<strong>and</strong>ards (ebXML <strong>and</strong> AS2 66 ),<br />
effective cross-sectoral partnerships, <strong>and</strong><br />
no certification overheads.<br />
Decentralised development <strong>and</strong> implementation <strong>in</strong>frastructure<br />
S<strong>in</strong>ce its earliest <strong>in</strong>carnation, papiNet® has been an effective collaborative <strong>in</strong>itiative<br />
between European <strong>and</strong> North American companies. Accord<strong>in</strong>g to Art Coleman, Drybridge<br />
Consult<strong>in</strong>g (www.drybridge.com) <strong>and</strong> papiNet® Technical Director, one of <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong><br />
reasons for success is <strong>the</strong> decentralisation of <strong>the</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ards development <strong>and</strong><br />
implementation process <strong>in</strong> a global environment: “We have geographically oriented<br />
market segment implementation groups (SIGs). This collaborative structure to<br />
communicate developments works quite well. For example <strong>in</strong> Europe we have strong<br />
F<strong>in</strong>e <strong>Paper</strong> <strong>and</strong> Packag<strong>in</strong>g SIGs <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> North America <strong>the</strong> Book Manufactur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />
Publication <strong>Paper</strong>s are <strong>the</strong> dom<strong>in</strong>ant SIGs”.<br />
Messag<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>teroperability<br />
papiNet® st<strong>and</strong>ard Version 1.0 allowed for different messag<strong>in</strong>g st<strong>and</strong>ards. This <strong>in</strong>cluded<br />
<strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al EPC Messenger 67 developed as part of <strong>the</strong> first European implementations.<br />
St<strong>and</strong>ard version 2 has kept pace with <strong>in</strong>ternational st<strong>and</strong>ards developments <strong>and</strong> has<br />
firmly established ebMS (<strong>the</strong> ebXML Messag<strong>in</strong>g Service) as <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>teroperability<br />
messag<strong>in</strong>g core. 68<br />
Exhibit 4-6 illustrates <strong>the</strong> approach to ensur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>teroperability while allow<strong>in</strong>g cont<strong>in</strong>ued<br />
flexibility <strong>in</strong> choice of different messag<strong>in</strong>g st<strong>and</strong>ards. Messag<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>teroperability is<br />
achieved when <strong>the</strong> discrete papiNet® payload can be unwrapped from its various<br />
envelopes. Trad<strong>in</strong>g partners can use <strong>the</strong> particular message service of <strong>the</strong>ir choice.<br />
