Important e-bus<strong>in</strong>ess trends <strong>and</strong> implications<br />

In <strong>the</strong> P&P <strong>in</strong>dustry, <strong>the</strong> impact of <strong>ICT</strong> is ma<strong>in</strong>ly felt as a driver <strong>and</strong> enabler of process<br />

<strong>in</strong>novation <strong>in</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess-to-bus<strong>in</strong>ess (B2B) trad<strong>in</strong>g processes <strong>and</strong> logistics. Meet<strong>in</strong>g<br />

requirements for organis<strong>in</strong>g trade <strong>and</strong> logistics on an <strong>in</strong>ternational scale has been a<br />

strong driver of <strong>ICT</strong> adoption. However, <strong>the</strong> e-bus<strong>in</strong>ess activities <strong>and</strong> experience of <strong>the</strong><br />

smaller companies <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sector are quite different from those of large companies. The<br />

large P&P manufactur<strong>in</strong>g companies are quite advanced users of e-bus<strong>in</strong>ess, while<br />

many of <strong>the</strong> smaller companies rely on a ra<strong>the</strong>r simple <strong>ICT</strong> <strong>in</strong>frastructure.<br />

papiNet® – a success story<br />

Agreement on common st<strong>and</strong>ards l<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g disparate ERP systems between trad<strong>in</strong>g<br />

partners is one of <strong>the</strong> critical success factors for e-bus<strong>in</strong>ess. The P&P <strong>in</strong>dustry has<br />

developed <strong>and</strong> promotes <strong>the</strong> papiNet® st<strong>and</strong>ard for facilitat<strong>in</strong>g B2B trade processes.<br />

Despite <strong>the</strong> success of this st<strong>and</strong>ard <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sector, <strong>the</strong>re is still considerable scope for<br />

new implementations, especially those <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g small <strong>and</strong> medium-sized enterprises<br />

(SMEs) – see Section 4.1.<br />
