3.4 Internal <strong>and</strong> External e-Integration of Processes<br />

The use of <strong>ICT</strong> <strong>and</strong> e-bus<strong>in</strong>ess to support <strong>and</strong> optimise <strong>in</strong>tra-firm processes has become<br />

<strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly important, particularly <strong>in</strong> manufactur<strong>in</strong>g. By digitisation of formerly paperbased<br />

processes, <strong>in</strong>formation <strong>and</strong> documents related to <strong>in</strong>com<strong>in</strong>g or outgo<strong>in</strong>g orders<br />

can be seamlessly processed along <strong>the</strong> company's value cha<strong>in</strong>; orders can be l<strong>in</strong>ked<br />

with production <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>ventory management, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> underly<strong>in</strong>g software systems support<br />

controll<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> management by enabl<strong>in</strong>g full transparency of all bus<strong>in</strong>ess processes.<br />

Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore, collaborative processes with<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> between companies are supported,<br />

such as <strong>in</strong>formation shar<strong>in</strong>g among employees (for example by use of an <strong>in</strong>tranet),<br />

plann<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> dem<strong>and</strong> forecast, organis<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> archiv<strong>in</strong>g documents, <strong>and</strong> human<br />

resources management. In general, <strong>ICT</strong> applications for <strong>the</strong>se purposes are predom<strong>in</strong>antly<br />

used <strong>in</strong>itially by large companies, <strong>and</strong> eventually also by medium-sized firms.<br />

How companies from <strong>the</strong> P&P <strong>in</strong>dustry make use of <strong>ICT</strong> as a driver of process efficiency<br />

is expla<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>and</strong> discussed <strong>in</strong> detail <strong>in</strong> section 4.2. This section describes <strong>the</strong> diffusion of<br />

specific applications <strong>in</strong> this field.<br />

3.4.1 Use of software systems for <strong>in</strong>ternal process <strong>in</strong>tegration<br />

In <strong>the</strong> P&P <strong>in</strong>dustry, only about one <strong>in</strong> four companies <strong>in</strong>terviewed said <strong>the</strong>y used an<br />

<strong>in</strong>tranet. This facility can be a useful platform for <strong>the</strong> secure exchange of <strong>in</strong>formation<br />

with<strong>in</strong> a company <strong>and</strong>, possibly, <strong>the</strong> implementation of <strong>in</strong>ternal tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g programmes (see<br />

Exhibit 3-15).<br />
