IBO - <strong>Environmental</strong> <strong>and</strong> Health <strong>related</strong> Criteria <strong>for</strong> Buildings<br />

The amount of energy intended to be contributed by renewable energy systems, in MJ/m² per year, not<br />

including daylighting or Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHP). The assessment proposal <strong>for</strong> small<br />

residential <strong>buildings</strong> ranges from 50 (acceptable practice) – 100 MJ/m² per year (best practice)<br />

If a feasibility study concerning the use of renewable energy sources (e.g wind energy, small<br />

hydro, photovoltaics, solar air heating, biomass heating, solar hot water heating, passive<br />

solar heating <strong>and</strong> ground-source heat pumps) has been carried out, this is additionally<br />

awarded within subsection A2. Project Planning.<br />

Electrical Peak Dem<strong>and</strong><br />

SBTool assesses not only the annual energy requirement of <strong>buildings</strong> based on average<br />

climate data <strong>and</strong> user behaviour, but also the electrical peak dem<strong>and</strong> (which are key<br />

parameters <strong>for</strong> the power supply systems). Not only the energy consumption averaged over<br />

one year should be lowered but also saisonal or daily peak loads.<br />

Embodied Energy<br />

Energy <strong>for</strong> constructing the building on site, <strong>for</strong> maintenance <strong>and</strong> refurbishment of building<br />

elements or HVAC systems or removal/disposal/recycling processes <strong>and</strong> the end of life-time<br />

are not explicitly mentioned. The focus lies on the first material input <strong>and</strong> the operation<br />

phase.<br />

The same division as <strong>for</strong> energy (embodied in construction materials <strong>and</strong> caused by facility<br />

operations) is maintained <strong>for</strong> Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GHG). For all other atmospheric<br />

emissions calculated within the SBTool such as ozone-depleting substances, acidifying<br />

emissions or emissions creating photo-oxidants only facility operations are looked upon.<br />

Traffic-<strong>related</strong> Energy Aspects<br />

Besides the requirement <strong>for</strong> regional products <strong>for</strong> construction (B4.9), the main focus of<br />

assessment lies on private car journeys during the operation phase. Site Selection (A1) is<br />

evaluated by assessing the proximity of site to public transportation, distance between site<br />

<strong>and</strong> centres of employment, proximity to commercial <strong>and</strong> cultural facilities as well as public<br />

recreation areas <strong>and</strong> facilities. SBTool also awards initiatives of communities to decrease<br />

traffic by policies governing use of private vehicles, encouraging builders to provide mixed<br />

uses within the project <strong>and</strong> enhancing community design that provides support <strong>for</strong> walking in<br />

<strong>and</strong> around the project. The project layout shall consider bicycle storage facilities, where<br />

cycling paths are available, <strong>and</strong> provide a safe, convenient <strong>and</strong> attractive environment <strong>for</strong><br />

walking.<br />

Weightings<br />

SBTool attempts to derive the weighting of categories <strong>and</strong> indicators from the expected<br />

extent of the potential effect (global or regional = 3, urban or neighbourhood = 2, building or<br />

site = 1), from the expected intensity of a potential effect (strong or direct = 3, moderate or<br />

indirect = 2, weak = 1) <strong>and</strong> from the expected duration of a potential effect (> 50 years = 3;<br />

> 10 years = 2; < 10 years = 1) leading to the following weighting within the categories “B<br />
