can be represented in arbitrary type <strong>and</strong> size. During the research fixed point<br />

<strong>and</strong> floating point number arithmetic units with different mantissa width were<br />

investigated in order to find the optimal precision for a qualitative good result.<br />

During the implementation process I used the Xilinx Foundation ISE softwares<br />

with VHSIC hardware description language (VHDL) language. For the software<br />

simulation I used the MentorGraphics Modelsim SE software.<br />

The Chapter 1 is built up as follows. First the CNN paradigm is introduced.<br />

It is capable to solve complex spatio-temporal problems. The st<strong>and</strong>ard CNN<br />

cell should be extended with a control unit <strong>and</strong> with memory units in order to<br />

get an universal machine, which is based on the stored programmability (the<br />

extension is introduced in Chapter 4). Several studies proved the effectiveness<br />

of the CNN-UM solution of different PDEs [15, 16]. After the previous section<br />

several implementations of the CNN-UM principle are listed. The emulated digital<br />

CNN-UM is a reasonable alternative to solve different PDEs. It has mixed<br />

the benefits of the software simulation <strong>and</strong> the analog solution. Namely the high<br />

configurability <strong>and</strong> the precision of the software solution <strong>and</strong> the high computing<br />

speed of the analog solution. In the later Chapters the CNN simulation kernel is<br />

going to be introduced on the IBM Cell processor <strong>and</strong> on the FPGA. In order to<br />

get the reader a clear underst<strong>and</strong>ing from the framework a brief introduction of<br />

the hardware specifications are presented. The final section is an outlook of the<br />

recent trends in many core systems.
