It explains why people atwork behave in the way they do in terms of their efforts and the directions they aretaking. It describes what organizations can do to encourage people to apply theirefforts and abilities in ways that will further the achievement of the organization’sgoals as well as satisfying their own needs. It is also concerned with job satisfaction –the factors that create it and its impact on performance. In understanding and applying motivation theory, the aim is to obtain added valuethrough people in the sense that the value of their output exceeds the cost of generatingit. This can be achieved through discretionary effort. In most if not all roles thereis scope for individuals to decide how much effort they want to exert. They can dojust enough to get away with it, or they can throw themselves into their work anddeliver added value. Discretionary effort can be a key component in organizationalperformance.
