42Reward managementThis chapter provides an overview of reward management. The concept of rewardmanagement, its strategic and detailed aims and its philosophy are discussedinitially. Reference is also made to the economic factors that affect levels of pay.This is followed by descriptions of the elements of a reward management system andthe concept of total reward. The chapter ends with descriptions of particular applicationsof reward management for directors and executives, sales staff and manualworkers.REWARD <strong>MANAGEMENT</strong> DEFINEDReward management is concerned with the formulation and implementationof strategies and policies, the purposes of which are to reward people fairly, equitablyand consistently in accordance with their value to the organization and thushelp the organization to achieve its strategic goals. It deals with the design, implementationand maintenance of reward systems (reward processes, practicesand procedures) that aim to meet the needs of both the organization and itsstakeholders.
