552 ❚ Human resource developmentLEARNING STYLESLearning theories describe in general terms how people learn, but individual learnerswill have different styles – a preference for a particular approach to learning. The twomost familiar classifications of learning styles are those produced by Kolb and byHoney and Mumford.Kolb’s learning style inventoryKolb et al (1974) identified a learning cycle consisting of four stages as shown inFigure 37.1. He defined these stages as follows:●●●●Concrete experience – this can be planned or accidental.Reflective observation – this involves actively thinking about the experience and itssignificance.Abstract conceptualization (theorizing) – generalizing from experience in order todevelop various concepts and ideas which can be applied when similar situationsare encountered.Active experimentation – testing the concepts or ideas in new situations.
