33The process of performancemanagementPERFORMANCE <strong>MANAGEMENT</strong> AS A PROCESSPerformance management should be regarded as a flexible process, not as a ‘system’.The use of the term ‘system’ implies a rigid, standardized and bureaucratic approachthat is inconsistent with the concept of performance management as a flexible andevolutionary, albeit coherent, process that is applied by managers working with theirteams in accordance with the circumstances in which they operate. As such, itinvolves managers and those whom they manage acting as partners, but within aframework that sets out how they can best work together.PERFORMANCE <strong>MANAGEMENT</strong> AS A CYCLEPerformance management can be described as a continuous self-renewing cycle, asillustrated in Figure 33.1.
