Organizational culture ❚ 309Leadership styleLeadership style, often called management style, describes the approach managersuse to deal with people in their teams. There are many styles of leadership, andleaders can be classified in extremes as follows:●●●●Charismatic/non-charismatic. Charismatic leaders rely on their personality, theirinspirational qualities and their ‘aura’. They are visionary leaders who areachievement-oriented, calculated risk-takers and good communicators. Noncharismaticleaders rely mainly on their know-how (authority goes to the personwho knows), their quiet confidence and their cool, analytical approach to dealingwith problems.Autocratic-democratic. Autocratic leaders impose their decisions, using their positionto force people to do as they are told. Democratic leaders encourage people toparticipate and involve themselves in decision-taking.Enabler-controller. Enablers inspire people with their vision of the future andempower them to accomplish team goals. Controllers manipulate people toobtain their compliance.Transactional-transformational. Transactional leaders trade money, jobs and securityfor compliance. Transformational leaders motivate people to strive for higherlevelgoals.Most managers adopt an approach somewhere between the extremes. Some will varyit according to the situation or their feelings at the time, others will stick to the samestyle whatever happens. A good case can be made for using an appropriate styleaccording to the situation, but it is undesirable to be inconsistent in the style used insimilar situations. Every manager has his or her own style but this will be influencedby the organizational culture, which may produce a prevailing management stylethat represents the behavioural norm for managers that is generally expected andadopted.CLASSIFYING ORGANIZATIONAL CULTUREThere have been many attempts to classify or categorize organizational culture as abasis for the analysis of cultures in organizations and for taking action to support orchange them. Most of these classifications are expressed in four dimensions and someof the best-known ones are summarized below.
