Job evaluation ❚ 667A ‘proprietary brand’, ie one provided by consultants, was used by 37 per cent ofrespondents and 26 per cent used a hybrid or tailored version of a proprietary brand. The Hay Guide Chart Profile method dominated the market (83 per cent of theproprietary brand schemes). Organizations opting for a proprietary brand did sobecause of its credibility and, especially with Hay, its link to a market rate database.Organizations opting for a home grown approach did so because they believed thiswould ensure that it could be shaped to meet the strategic needs of the organizationand fit its technology, structure, work processes and business objectives. A minorityof respondents mentioned the scope for aligning the scheme with their competencyframework.COMPUTER-ASSISTED JOB EVALUATIONComputers can be used to help directly with the job evaluation process.Types of schemesThere are two types of computer-assisted systems.First, there are job analysis-based schemes such as that offered by Link Consultants inwhich the job analysis data is either entered direct into the computer or transferred toit from a paper questionnaire. The computer software applies predetermined rulesbased on an algorithm that reflects the organization’s evaluation standards to convertthe data into scores for each factor and produce a total score. The algorithm replicatespanel judgements both on job factor levels and overall job score.Secondly, there are interactive schemes using software such as that supplied by PilatUK (Gauge) in which the job holder and his or her manager sit in front of a PC and arepresented with a series of logically interrelated questions forming a question tree; theanswers to these questions lead to a score for each of the built-in factors in turn and atotal score.Advantages of computer-assisted job evaluationComputer-assisted job evaluation systems can:●●●provide for greater consistency – the same input information will always give thesame output result because the judgemental framework on which the scheme isbased (the algorithm) can be applied consistently to the input data;offer extensive database capabilities for sorting, analysing and reporting on theinput information and system outputs;speed up the job evaluation process once the initial design is complete.
