FORSTER.WHEREAS by an Order in Council dated theSth day of November, 1914, entitled theCyprus (Annexation) Order in Council, 1914, itwas directed that from and after the date of thesaid Order in Council the Island of Cyprus shouldbe annexed to, and form part of, His Majesty'sDominions :AND WHEREAS by a Proclamation dated theSrd day of March, 1915, the High Commissionerand Commander-in-Chief of Cyprus, hereinaftercalled the High Commissioner, declared that underand by virtue of the said Order in Council thefollowing provisions had effect, namely:—1. That all Ottoman Subjects resident inCyprus on the Sth November, 1914, had becomeBritish Subjects ;2. That any Ottoman Subject resident inCyprus on the Sth November, 1914, desiring toretain Ottoman nationahty might, by noticeunder his hand, addressed to the High Commissioner,elect to do so within one month ofthe coming into operation of the said Proclamation; and any such person electing so to domust leave Cyprus within two months after thedate of his election, and take up his residenceelsewhere, failing which he would be treated asa British Subject;3. Nothing in the said Proclamation containedwas to be deemed to affect the position of OttomanSubjects bom in Cjrprus, and resident elsewhereon the Sth November, 1914, with regardto whom a further Proclamation would be issuedin due course ;4. That the said Proclamation should come intooperation on the 4th March, 1915 :AND WHEREAS doubts have arisen as to theeffect of the said Order in Council of the Sthof November, 1914, upon the nationahty of OttomanSubjects who were in Cyprus on the datethereof, and as to the proper interpretation ofthe provisions of the said Proclamation regardingthe grant of British nationahty to OttomanSubjects resident in Cyprus at that date :AND WHEREAS it is desirable to make furtherprovision regarding the position of OttomanSubjects bom in Cyprus, and resident elsewhereon the Sth of November, 1914 :Now, <strong>THE</strong>REFORE, His Majesty is pleased, byand with the advice of His Privy Council, to orderand it is hereby ordered, as follows :^1. The following persons shall be deemed tohave become British Subjects under and byvirtue of the Cyprus (Annexation) Order inCouncil, 1914, and the Proclamation of the HighCommissioner of the Srd of March, 1915 :—(i) (a) Any Ottoman Subject who was ordinarilyresident, and actually present, inCyprus on the Sth of November, 1914 ;(6) Any Ottoman Subject who was ordinarilyresident in Cyprus on the Sth ofNovember, 1914, but was absent fromCyprus on that date for the purposeonly of his education, or for someother temporary purpose. 'Provided that no Ottoman Subject comingwithin Paragraphs (a) and (6) of this Sub-articlewho, by notice under his hand addressed to theHigh Commissioner before the 4th day of April,1915, elected to retain Ottoman nationality, and,if present in Cyprus at the date of such election,left Cyprus within 2 months after that date andtook up his residence elsewhere, shall be deemedto have become a British Subject under and byvirtue of the Cyprus (Annexation) Order inCouncil, 1914, the High Commissioner's Proclamationof the Srd of March, 191S, or this Order.(ii) Any Ottoman Subject who, having beenbom in Cjrprus, was not ordinarily resident thereon the 5th of November, 1914, and who(a) shall apply to the High Commissionerbefore the expiration of 2 years from thetermination of the present War for a certificateof British nationality under thisOrder; and(6) shall have resided in Cyprus for not lessthan 1 year immediately preceding such,apphcation ; andΚΥΠΡΙΑΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ
