Now in an hour of thankfulnessand hope I should like to give a message to thewomen of the Empire.During the war they have been given the highprivilege of service, they have risen to the greatopportunity and have proved their courage steadfastnessand abihty.I have been allowed to watch and appreciatetheir work in many parts of the country andmy heart is full of admiration and gratitude forwhat I have seen.I earnestly trust that, though the thrill andglamour of war are over, the spirit of self-sacrificeand helpfulness which it has kindled will notwane in the coming days. A new era is dawningupon the world bringing with it many difficulties,fresh responsibilities and serious problems to befaced.Parliament has secured for the whole coimtrygreater opportunities of more thorough andvaried education but it will depend upon theparents whether these opportunities are used tothe full. , . .We all rejoice that plans are afoot for brmgmgto an end the existence of such bad and crowdedhousing as makes homelife ahnost impossible.To-day, more than ever, the Empire needsher daughters, for, in the larget world of publicand industrial work, women are daily taking amore important place.As we have been united in all our work,whether of head or hands, in a real sisterhoodof suffering and service durmg the war, let usgo on working together with the same unity ofpurpose for the resettlement and reconstructioiiof oiir country._MARY, R.4th December, 1918.
