CLAUSON.<strong>THE</strong> <strong>CYPRUS</strong> <strong>GAZETTE</strong> (EXTRAORDINARY), llth JUNE, 1918. 177High Commissioner.APPENDIX A.COMMISSION.By His Excellency Sir John Eugene Clauson, Major in the Reserve ofOfficers of the Corps of Royal Engineers, Knight Commander of the MostDistinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George, Commander of theRoyal Victorian Order, High Commissioner and Commander-in-Chief in andover the Island of Cyprus :To His Honour Sir Charles Robert Tyser, Knight Bachelor, ChiefJustice of the Supreme Court, John Cyril Douglas Fenn, Esquire, ChiefAssistant Secretary, Office of the Chief Secretary to Government, and JohnStyhano Markides, Esquire, Chief Registrar and Interpreter, Supreme Court:GREETING.Whereas it has seemed to me expedient in the pubhc interest that aOommission should be issued appointing Commissioners to enquire andreport on the following matters:—1. The extent, causes and effects of indebtedness in the Island.2. The reahsation and distribution of the estates of debtors and insolventpersons.3. Whether any, and if so what remedial measures are required for theprotection of creditors and debtors and for the rehef of the poorer classes ofthe community.Now, therefore, I do by this Commission under my hand and the PubhcSeal of the Island appoint you the said Sir Charles Tyser, John CyrilDouglas Fenn, Esquire, and John Styhano Markides, Esquire, to be Commissionersfor enquiring into and reporting on the matters hereinbeforementioned with power to appoint or authorise any other person or personsthemselves or by their agents to make enquiry into such matters andtransmit to you notes of all evidence taken before them with their reportthereon.And I direct you the said Commissioners or any one or more of youor any such person as aforesaid acting by your authority to examine onwritten interrogatories or viva voce all such persons as you or he think fitwho can give evidence bearing on the matters into which you are herebyappointed to enquire; and to take a note in writing of all such viva voceevidence as may be material; and to make true copies or extracts or anybooks letters documents or writings certified by a Commissioner of anyperson acting as aforesaid to be true and correct copies or extracts, in anycase in which the original cannot be retained. The original to be marked sofar as possible for identification.And for enabhng you the said Commissioners to make> full enquiry intothe matters referred to you, I charge and enjoin aU persons within thisIsland who may be called upon by you so to do to afford all information onquestions relevant to or connected with the said enquiry and I authoriseand direct all pubhc officers to afford all such aid, assistance, and informationas you may require.And I do hereby invite all persons who have knowledge of the mattersthe subject of this Commission or who are agrieved by the existing state ofthe law to come forward and tender themselves as witnesses at such timesand places as may be appointed by any Commissioner or person acting asaforesaid, or on the request of any Commissioner to forward to the saidCommissioner a written statement of the facts within then- knowledge.»ΚΥΠΡΙΑΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ
