PRETYMAN.SIR CHARLES DARLING.SIR AUCKLAND CAMPBELL GEDDES.WHEREAS by the Cyprus Courts of JusticeOrder, 1882, Her Majesty Queen Victoria,by virtue of the powers in that hehalf by theForeign Jurisdiction Acts, 1843 to 1878, or otherwisevested in Her, was pleased, by and withthe advice of Her Privy Council, to make provisionfor the Administration of Justice in Cyprus:AND WHEREAS by Articles 23 and 24 of thesaid Order it was provided that every Court andJudge exercising Civil Jurisdiction in an OttomanAction or exercising Criminal Jurisdiction wherean Ottoman Subject was accused, should applyOttoman Law, as from time to time alteredor modified by Cyprus Statute Law, and thatevery Court and Judge exercising Civil Jurisdictionin a Foreign Action, or exercising CriminalJurisdiction where a person, not being an OttomanSubject, was accused, should apply Enghsh Law,as from time to time altered or modified byCyprus Statute Law:AND WHEREAS by Article 3 of the said Orderit was directed that, subject as therein mentioned,in the constraction of the said Order the words" Ottoman Action " should mean an Action inwhich the Defendant was or all the Defendantswere an Ottoman Subject or Ottoman Subjects,and the words "Foreign Action" should meanan Action in which the Defendant or any Defendantwas not an Ottoman Subject:AND WHEREAS by the Cypras (Annexation)Order in Council, 1914, Cyprus was annexed toHis Majesty's Dominions, and it was therebyprovided that nothing therein should affect thevalidity of any Order in Council affecting Cyprus,save in so far as any provision of any such Ordermight be repugnant to the provisions of any Actof Parliament which might, by reason of the saidannexation, become extended to Cyprus:AND WHEREAS by virtue of such last-mentionedOrder in Council the greater part of those personsin the said Island who before the coming intooperation of the said Order were Ottoman Subjectshave become British Subjects:AND WHEREAS by the Cyprus (Annexation)Amendment Order in Council, 1917, further provisionhas been made regarding the grant ofBritish Nationality to Ottoman Subjects bom inCyprus, but resident elsewhere on the Sth ofNovember, 1914:AND WHEREAS it is expedient to make provisionthat all persons becoming British Subjectsunder or by virtue of the above-mentioned Ordersshould not be deprived of the rights conferred onthem by Article 23 of the Cypras Courts ofJustice Order, 1882, and to amend the said lastmentionedOrder accordingly:Now <strong>THE</strong>REFORE, His Majesty is pleased, byand with the advice of His Privy Council, toorder, and it is hereby ordered as follows:—(1) This Order may be cited as "The CyprusCourts of Justice Amendment Order, 1917," and,where not inconsistent therewith, shall be readas one with " The Cyprus Courts of Justice Order,1882," " The Cjrprus Courts of Justice AmendmentOrder, 1902," "The Cypras Courts of JusticeAmendment Order, 1908," "The Cyprus Courtsof Justice Amendment Order, 1909," and "TheCyprus Courts of Justice Amendment Order,1910," and the said Orders may be cited as " TheCyprus Courts of Justice Orders, 1882 to 1917."(2) Article 3 of The Cypras Courts of JusticeOrder, 1882, shall be constraed and read as if thefollowing definition were therein substituted forthe definition of " Ottoman Action " :—" Cypriot Action " means an Action in whichthe Defendant is, or all the Defendants are, personswho, being Ottoman Subjects, became orshall become, or who, being the children of suchpersons, shall become, British Subjects under orby virtue of "The Cyprus (Annexation) Ordersin Council, 1914 and 1917."ΚΥΠΡΙΑΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ
