_________________LEE UNIVERSITY FACULTY HANDBOOK & CONSTITUTION_________________RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE FACULTYTeaching LoadAssumptions of the Workload Profile Development1. All academic assignments such as courses and preparations will be made first.Faculty are expected to teach Monday through Friday. Requests from faculty forspecial schedules that are not five days a week require approval, so the facultymember should send his/her department chair a rationale and a request in writing. Ifthe department chair agrees with the request, it should be forwarded to the dean andthe VPAA for approval. University Service Points will be determined after theteaching part of the load has been established.2. Overloads will only be compensated when they result from a request made by thedepartment chair. The respective dean and the academic vice president mustapprove the overload. Additionally, a dean or the VPAA may request an overload.Individuals may not initiate overloads for pay.3. Standing point values will be given to committees and sponsorships appointed by thecabinet. Ad hoc committees of the department and the university will be consideredto be part of the faculty member's commitment to the university and will not receiveservice points. However, deans and department chairs may assign service points tostanding departmental committees subject to the approval of the VPAA.4. It is the responsibility of non-tenured faculty to select profiles that will lead to areasonable amount of involvement with students outside the classroom. Departmentchairs and deans should keep this important value in mind while negotiatingworkloads with probationary faculty.5. Community service, service to students beyond academic and Student Developmentassignments, and service to community of faith are expected elements of a facultymember's Christian and professional commitment in the Lee University context andwill not be given specific load credit.6. Research Profiles 3, 13 and 14 must be requested before the faculty membercompletes the Workload Profile form.7. Faculty in Profiles 3, 13 and 14 may not teach overloads. This includes overloadsgenerated by teaching LEEU101, LEEU 102A and LEEU 102B.Profile 1: Dean’s ProfileThis profile is specifically designed for Deans. Many of their committeeassignments are ex officio and are included as part of their administrative assignment.Deans are expected to teach 6 hours per year.Profile 2: Chair’s ProfileDepartment chairs are expected to teach 12 hours per year. Their remaining 12hours are credited for administrative responsibilities and ex officio committeeassignments. Any exceptions to this minimum must be approved in advance by theimmediate supervisor.Profile 3: Teaching and (a) Individual Research and (b) Research InvolvingStudentsThis is similar to Profiles 13 and 14, except that the research will be on a smallerscale, leaving more of the faculty member's time for the classroom.5 - 1 Responsibilities of the Faculty
