_________________LEE UNIVERSITY FACULTY HANDBOOK & CONSTITUTION_________________The Vice President for Academic Affairs is responsible for implementing theprocedures as outlined in the policy for emeritus faculty.Present faculty emeriti are:Lois U. Bilbo, Professor Emeritus of EducationEllen French, Professor Emeritus of EnglishRuth Crawford Lindsey, Professor Emeritus of EnglishBarbara McCullough, Professor Emeritus of Library ScienceRobert O’Bannon, Professor Emeritus of BiologyBeatrice Odom, Professor Emeritus of Christian EducationGeorge Voorhis, Professor Emeritus of Biblical StudiesSabord Woods, Professor Emeritus of EnglishNon-traditional Teaching OpportunitiesAs part of the general education core, each student must meet the requirements of aGlobal Perspectives component before graduation. In additional to an introductoryseminar course, students must participate in a cross-cultural study opportunity eitherstateside or abroad.Faculty members coordinate and lead these trips and are encouraged to develop newstudy abroad opportunities for students. Trips may be associated with a specific major oropen to all majors. The majority of these trips are taken over the summer, but a few arescheduled during Spring break and between the Fall and Spring semesters.Faculty pay is determined by number of credit hours taught and the number ofstudents on the trip. Standard pay is $500 per credit hour for faculty with Mastersdegrees and $600 per credit hour for faculty with Doctoral degrees. The GNST250course is always $300 per credit hour regardless of the number of students or facultyeducation. Faculty and staff leaders must complete a physical examination prior to thegroup’s departure.Some study abroad trips are offered annually, while others are offered on alternateyears, and new trips are developed each year. With this in mind, the full list of studyabroad opportunities changes each year. Guidance for preparing astudy abroad proposal is available to faculty by contacting the Global Perspectives Office.Opportunities Available Through the Appalachian College AssociationWhat is the Appalachian College Association?It is a non-profit organization governed by an Executive Board composed ofpresidents of liberal arts colleges in the mountains of Kentucky, North Carolina,Tennessee, Virginia and west Virginia. Funding is provided by a variety of foundationsand federal agencies including the Teagle Foundation, Mellon Foundation, NationalScience Foundation, the Appalachian Regional Commission and the Department ofCommerce. Originally an outgrowth of the Appalachian College program which originatedin 1979 at the University of Kentucky, the ACA is now located in Berea, Kentucky.The mission of the ACA is to help Appalachia’s small independent colleges toimprove the quality of education throughout central Appalachia; to have a significant,positive impact on the residents of this frequently neglected area; and to better facilitate,organize and apply the schools’ resources of time, knowledge and expertise byenhancing cooperation between member colleges and by strengthening the professionalcredentials of their faculties.Who is eligible for ACA fellowships?Full-time faculty members at ACA colleges with continuing appointments in thehumanities, social sciences, mathematics and natural sciences are eligible forfellowships. The funding supports one-year pre- or post-doctoral research, one-semesterpre- or post-doctoral research, summer or short-term pre-or post-doctoral work, andfaculty/student research grants. Priority is given to applications that emphasize the useof technology in teaching and research.I.
