Guidance for preparing astudy abroad proposal is available to faculty by contacting the Global Perspectives Office.Opportunities Available Through the Appalachian College AssociationWhat is the Appalachian College Association?It is a non-profit organization governed by an Executive Board composed ofpresidents of liberal arts colleges in the mountains of Kentucky, North Carolina,Tennessee, Virginia and west Virginia. Funding is provided by a variety of foundationsand federal agencies including the Teagle Foundation, Mellon Foundation, NationalScience Foundation, the Appalachian Regional Commission and the Department ofCommerce. Originally an outgrowth of the Appalachian College program which originatedin 1979 at the <strong>University</strong> of Kentucky, the ACA is now located in Berea, Kentucky.The mission of the ACA is to help Appalachia’s small independent colleges toimprove the quality of education throughout central Appalachia; to have a significant,positive impact on the residents of this frequently neglected area; and to better facilitate,organize and apply the schools’ resources of time, knowledge and expertise byenhancing cooperation between member colleges and by strengthening the professionalcredentials of their faculties.Who is eligible for ACA fellowships?Full-time faculty members at ACA colleges with continuing appointments in thehumanities, social sciences, mathematics and natural sciences are eligible forfellowships. The funding supports one-year pre- or post-doctoral research, one-semesterpre- or post-doctoral research, summer or short-term pre-or post-doctoral work, andfaculty/student research grants. Priority is given to applications that emphasize the useof technology in teaching and research.I.
