_________________LEE UNIVERSITY FACULTY HANDBOOK & CONSTITUTION_________________does not choose to resign, he/she will be considered to have violated his/her contract,and the Board of Directors shall terminate his/her services within the limitations of thecontract and the provisions of due process.If during his/her service at <strong>Lee</strong> <strong>University</strong> a member of the faculty advocates in his/herteaching or publications anything contrary to the Declaration of Faith of the Church ofGod, the President and the Vice President for Academic Affairs will request the teacher todiscuss the matter with them in an attempt to reach a mutually satisfactory resolution. Ifthe problem is not resolved after such discussions, the administration shall initiatedismissal proceedings in accordance with the due process provisions of the dismissalpolicy (Section 5).Section 3. TenureFull-time teaching faculty members may be granted tenure if they are retained after sixyears of service on the <strong>Lee</strong> <strong>University</strong> faculty.Qualifications and Terms of ServiceA. The faculty member must hold the appropriate terminal degree from an accreditedinstitution or have demonstrated commensurate professional achievement.B. The faculty member must hold the rank of assistant professor or higher.C. The faculty member must demonstrate:1. Excellent teaching skills as judged by the “pool of information which has beensystematically gathered” by the <strong>Faculty</strong> Evaluation System (<strong>Faculty</strong> EvaluationSystem, 1985:1).2. Continuing professional development in such areas as additional graduate work,attendance at workshops and seminars, research, active participation in professionalorganizations, and recitals and/or other high-quality public performance.3. Contribution to the life of the university in areas other than the classroom.Consideration for TenureA. The faculty member will be considered for tenure in the sixth year of full-time,uninterrupted service at <strong>Lee</strong> <strong>University</strong> if holding the rank of assistant professor orabove and the appropriate terminal degree from an accredited institution orcommensurate professional achievement. Professional achievement in lieu of thedoctorate must be established in advance with a Portfolio of Evidence reviewed byexperts in the field and approved by the Tenure Review Committee. If tenure isapproved, it will become effective in the seventh year of service. Exceptions to thesixth year tenure review are:1. A maximum of three years of previous college teaching may be applied towardtenure. Extraordinary professional accomplishment may be considered in lieu ofprevious college teaching.2. If an individual has been granted an official leave of absence, he or she will not beconsidered to have interrupted his or her continued service record.3. After tenure has been granted, official leave of absence shall not affect tenurestatus.B. The faculty member who is not approved for tenure in the sixth year of service at <strong>Lee</strong><strong>University</strong> may be terminated, granted continuing contract status, or may continue ina probationary status. Probationary faculty members will have a final tenure review no4 – 8 <strong>Faculty</strong> <strong>Constitution</strong> and Bylaws
