_________________LEE UNIVERSITY FACULTY HANDBOOK & CONSTITUTION_________________C. Senior <strong>Faculty</strong> Reviews take place in the fall of the sixth year following the finalregular promotion of the faculty member. The faculty member will prepare a portfoliofor the committee that will include the five Annual Evaluation Portfolios (as defined inSection 10 of the <strong>Faculty</strong> <strong>Handbook</strong>) completed since the last evaluation, studentcourse evaluations for all courses taught in the year prior to the review and otherinformation the faculty member may choose to submit. The faculty member will writea cover letter for the review portfolio and present it in person to the review committeemembers.D. The Senior <strong>Faculty</strong> Review Committee members will evaluate the sixth-year reviewportfolio using the criteria listed above in Section 3 under Qualifications and Terms ofService for the awarding of Tenure. Once the committee has completed its work, thecommittee chair and the individual’s department chair will meet with the facultymember to review the findings and make recommendations.E. Recommendations by the review committee may be affirmative, developmentaland/or prescriptive. Specific recommendations regarding incentives and professionalresources will depend upon the availability of such resources.F. If deemed necessary, the Director of <strong>Faculty</strong> Development will work with the facultymember to create a six-year development plan. The goals and activities of the planwill then become part of the annual Professional Activities Contract and Report.Section 5. Termination of Employment and Dismissal ProceduresA. Resignations and Voluntary TerminationProfessional ethics require a professor to give written notice in advance, whenpossible, if he/she does not intend to renew his/her contract. This is especially true ofthose on tenure. If a contract has not been signed and returned within 30 days after itis mailed from the President’s office, the administration shall consider it to have beendeclined. The faculty member may properly request a waiver of this requirement ofnotice in case of hardship.B. Renewal and Termination of <strong>Faculty</strong> on Probationary StatusDuring the period of probation the faculty member is entitled to the same guarantee ofacademic freedom as the tenured faculty. He/she shall not be dismissed before theexpiration of a term contract except for adequate cause demonstrated by dueprocess. If he/she asserts that he/she has been given notice of non-reappointment inviolation of the university’s standards of academic freedom, he/she is entitled toestablish his/her claim in accordance with the provisions of due process outlinedbelow.The faculty and administration have an important responsibility to evaluate theperformance of a non-tenured instructor and to recommend for tenure only those whohave demonstrated high standards of professional performance. The followingprinciples should govern the interaction of the non-tenured faculty member andhis/her colleagues:1. Criteria and notice of standards: The faculty member should be advised, early inhis/her appointment, of the substantive and procedural standards generally employedin decisions affecting renewal and tenure. Any special departmental standards mustbe brought to his/her attention.4 - 11 <strong>Faculty</strong> <strong>Constitution</strong> and Bylaws
