LEE UNIVERSITY FACULTY HANDBOOK & CONSTITUTIONbe given very sparingly and only to students who encounter some personal difficulty suchas illness or a family emergency near the end of the semester. The “I” grade should notbe given in order to allow students additional time to complete assignments.Grade “NG”A grade of “NG” represents “no grade”. One month after the deadline for faculty tosubmit grades at the end of each term, the Registrar will post a grade of “NG” for allmissing grades. The “NG” grade carries no academic weight and will not be averagedinto the GPA. It can be changed via a paper grade submission form at any time in thefuture by the respective faculty member.Grade “W”A grade of “W” is assigned to a student who, for any reason, officially withdraws fromthe university or withdraws from a course at any time after the registration (add/drop)period. The “W” is assigned without academic penalty to the student.Privacy of Student RecordsThe Privacy Act of 1974 requires that all claimants be informed of the purposes anduses to be made of the information in their records. The following is the policy of theRegistrar’s Office:1. Transcripts made for students’ use will be stamped “UNOFFICIAL COPY.”2. The Registrar’s Office requests at least one day’s notice for lists of students’GPA’s.3. Only authorized personnel in the Registrar’s Office have access to the records(except by permission).4. Because of the Privacy Act the students’ grades are not to be posted by name orsocial security number at the close of the semester.Non–Traditional CreditProficiency CreditIn some courses a proficiency examination may be given to qualified students in acourse offered and/or required by <strong>Lee</strong> <strong>University</strong> on the recommendation of thedepartment chairperson and approval of the school dean and the payment $30.00 fee foreach hour of credit received. Students taking proficiency examinations will be required topresent evidence that they have developed those abilities and aptitudes expected ofstudents who have taken the course involved. When possible this evidence should be inthe form of recognized and standardized tests. Upon passing the examination with aminimal grade of B, the student may be given credit. The maximum number of hours thatcan be earned by proficiency examination and/or correspondence is 32 semester hours.Credit earned through proficiency will be recorded with a grade of P and will not affect thestudent’s grade point average.The provision that permits proficiency credit is an attempt to give credit for skillsalready achieved so that the student avoids needless repetition. This is not a program of“directed study” and cannot be used as a means of obtaining credit outside theclassroom. Therefore, the student should not expect the teacher to provide study guidesor other detailed direction in preparation for a proficiency examination. The teacher mayindicate the minimum level achievement for credit.7 - 16 Academic Policies and Procedures
