_________________LEE UNIVERSITY FACULTY HANDBOOK & CONSTITUTION_________________Mini-Sabbaticals. Money for study, professional travel, and other projects conductedduring the summer is awarded annually through the President’s Office. The Presidentand the Vice President for Academic Affairs will announce or publish the applicationdeadlines.Leonard Center Grants. The Leonard Center for Christian Service will fundcompetitive grant applications for projects which combine community service with anacademic discipline.Tuition Assistance. Full-time faculty members are eligible to apply for assistancewith tuition by following the steps outlined below. If approved, tuition assistance will begranted to an individual for a maximum of 4 years.1. The individual should write out a plan for the proposed degree including all thefollowing elements:a. The exact degree soughtb. The university in which he/she plans to pursue the degreec. Any courses which might be required prior to admissiond. The estimated date of admission to the programe. The estimated number of hours in the total programf. Other requirements in addition to the required curriculum (e.g. language)g. An estimated time-frame for completion of the degree including the number ofcourses to be taken each semester and summerh. An estimate of requests for financing over the entire period broken down bysemesteri. An estimate of other requests such as released time or special scheduling ofclassesj. A summary of how this degree will benefit the university2. In addition to the general plan, the faculty member should submit a specific requestfor the next semester. Requests should be submitted at least one month prior toregistration.3. The individual should submit the proposal to his/her department chair and schedule atime to discuss it.4. If the department chair agrees that the proposal has merit and warrants full or partialfunding, he/she will submit the proposal with a recommendation to the Dean who willpass it on to the Vice President for Academic Affairs, and in some cases, to thePresident. Approval of the general plan does not imply that full funding will beavailable.5. Before receiving funding, the faculty member will be asked to sign a letter ofunderstanding which outlines the university’s expectation of service after the financialassistance is provided. The expectation of the university is that the faculty memberwill provide three full years of service after completion of their course of study andobtaining the doctorate. Should the faculty member decide to leave their position at<strong>Lee</strong>, the repayment of all tuition assistance paid by the university will be requiredaccording to the following schedule:No subsequent serviceOne year of serviceAll tuition costs will be repaid2/3 of the tuition costs6 - 14 Benefits of <strong>Faculty</strong> Service
