_________________LEE UNIVERSITY FACULTY HANDBOOK & CONSTITUTION_________________Mini-Sabbaticals. Money for study, professional travel, and other projects conductedduring the summer is awarded annually through the President’s Office. The Presidentand the Vice President for Academic Affairs will announce or publish the applicationdeadlines.Leonard Center Grants. The Leonard Center for Christian Service will fundcompetitive grant applications for projects which combine community service with anacademic discipline.Tuition Assistance. Full-time faculty members are eligible to apply for assistancewith tuition by following the steps outlined below. If approved, tuition assistance will begranted to an individual for a maximum of 4 years.1. The individual should write out a plan for the proposed degree including all thefollowing elements:a. The exact degree soughtb. The university in which he/she plans to pursue the degreec. Any courses which might be required prior to admissiond. The estimated date of admission to the programe. The estimated number of hours in the total programf. Other requirements in addition to the required curriculum (e.g. language)g. An estimated time-frame for completion of the degree including the number ofcourses to be taken each semester and summerh. An estimate of requests for financing over the entire period broken down bysemesteri. An estimate of other requests such as released time or special scheduling ofclassesj. A summary of how this degree will benefit the university2. In addition to the general plan, the faculty member should submit a specific requestfor the next semester. Requests should be submitted at least one month prior toregistration.3. The individual should submit the proposal to his/her department chair and schedule atime to discuss it.4. If the department chair agrees that the proposal has merit and warrants full or partialfunding, he/she will submit the proposal with a recommendation to the Dean who willpass it on to the Vice President for Academic Affairs, and in some cases, to thePresident. Approval of the general plan does not imply that full funding will beavailable.5. Before receiving funding, the faculty member will be asked to sign a letter ofunderstanding which outlines the university’s expectation of service after the financialassistance is provided. The expectation of the university is that the faculty memberwill provide three full years of service after completion of their course of study andobtaining the doctorate. Should the faculty member decide to leave their position atLee, the repayment of all tuition assistance paid by the university will be requiredaccording to the following schedule:No subsequent serviceOne year of serviceAll tuition costs will be repaid2/3 of the tuition costs6 - 14 Benefits of Faculty Service

Subsequent requests for funding should be made at least one month prior toregistration for each semester or summer directly to the office of the Vice Presidentfor Academic Affairs.7. Following each semester for which funding is granted, the instructor will provide anofficial transcript to the office of the academic vice president.8. It is the responsibility of the faculty member to keep the plan updated and to keep thedepartment chairperson fully informed.Tuition Waiver BenefitsUndergraduate Tuition Waiver Exchange ProgramAs a member of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities, the Council ofIndependent Colleges and The Tuition Exchange Plan, Lee employees or theirdependents may attend other participating member institutions with a waiver of regulartuition for provision of full educational benefits. Lee University employees may be eligiblefor this benefit if they are employed fulltime as administrator, faculty, and/or support staff.Guidelines, student application, and list of participating institutions may be found at thewebsites: www.cccu.org for the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities,www.cic.org for the Council of Independent Colleges and www.tuitionexchange.org forThe Tuition Exchange Plan.In order to request a slot in the TWEP at one of the participating institutions theemployee should submit the student application form to the TWEP Liaison Officer, in theDepartment of Human Resources. The student must have made application to theaccepting institution prior to submission of the student application form. The employee’sstatus will be evaluated and the student application validated and forwarded to the TWEPLiaison Office of the accepting institution. When the Lee University TWEP Liaison Officerhas been notified of a successful application request, the employee and the student willbe notified.Each participating member institution is required to accept at least one new and up tothree incoming students each year. Students who have been accepted by the memberinstitution and wish to graduate from that institution may continue their studies bysubmitting the student application each year through the Lee TWEP Liaison Officer.Recertification of eligibility will be forwarded to the member institution on the student’sbehalf in April of each year. The student’s continued eligibility requires that they continueto meet the academic and social standards of the host institution.Graduate Tuition Waiver Exchange ProgramThe Councils’ TWEP is extended to graduate studies only in member institutionswho have agreed to accept graduate students through the program. The list ofparticipating institutions on the websites is noted as to whether the graduate tuitionwaiver will be accepted by the institution. The guidelines and procedures for makingapplication, attaining eligibility and being re-certified are the same for graduate studies asfor undergraduate.Faculty HonorsExcellence in Teaching Award.
