LEE UNIVERSITY FACULTY HANDBOOK & CONSTITUTIONLast Revised: May 9, 2014Credit Hour PolicyPolicy: A semester credit hour is defined by <strong>Lee</strong> <strong>University</strong> as approximately 50 minutesof class work or faculty instruction per week for approximately fifteen weeks of thesemester. Additionally, the average minimum requirement for out-of-class work is theequivalent of two hours per credit hour, per week for the fifteen-week term. Practices forawarding credit hours in various academic activities are consistent with commonlyaccepted practices in higher education and are reviewed by the various bodies in thecurriculum approval process to ensure compliance and consistency.Purpose/Definition: For several decades, the federal government has relied on creditsas a measure of student academic engagement as a basis of awarding financial aid.Because of the significance of the awarding of credit for coursework or experiences, aninstitution is obligated to ensure that credit hours awarded for courses and programsconform to commonly accepted practices in higher education.<strong>Lee</strong>’s definition of a credit hour is comparable to the Federal definition of the credit hour.“In accord with federal regulations, a credit hour is an amount of work represented inintended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is aninstitutionally established equivalency that reasonably approximates (1) not less than onehour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours out of classstudent work each week for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester or trimesterhour of credit, or ten to twelve weeks for one quarter hour of credit, or the equivalentamount of work over a different amount of time, or (2) at least an equivalent amount ofwork as required outlined in item 1 above for other academic activities as established bythe institution including laboratory work, internships, practica, studio work, and otheracademic work leading to the award of credit hours.”Procedures: As stated in the <strong>Lee</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>Faculty</strong> <strong>Handbook</strong>, credit hours for eachcourse are determined within the curriculum development process.References:1. <strong>Lee</strong> <strong>University</strong>.
