The Danaans ask for three days'time to consider whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>y shall quit Irel<strong>and</strong>, or submit, or givebattle; <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y propose to leave <strong>the</strong> decision, upon <strong>the</strong>ir request,to Amergin. Amergin pronounces judgment—“<strong>the</strong> first judgmentwhich was delivered in Irel<strong>and</strong>.” He agrees that <strong>the</strong> Milesiansmust not take <strong>the</strong>ir foes by surprise—<strong>the</strong>y are to withdraw <strong>the</strong>length <strong>of</strong> nine waves from <strong>the</strong> shore, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n return; if <strong>the</strong>y <strong>the</strong>nconquer <strong>the</strong> Danaans <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong> is to be fairly <strong>the</strong>irs by right <strong>of</strong>battle.The Milesians submit to this decision <strong>and</strong> embark on <strong>the</strong>irships. But no sooner have <strong>the</strong>y drawn <strong>of</strong>f for this mysticaldistance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nine waves than a mist <strong>and</strong> storm are raisedby <strong>the</strong> sorceries <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Danaans—<strong>the</strong> coast <strong>of</strong> Irel<strong>and</strong> is hiddenfrom <strong>the</strong>ir sight, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y w<strong>and</strong>er dispersed upon <strong>the</strong> ocean. Toascertain if it is a natural or a Druidic tempest which afflicts <strong>the</strong>m,a man named Aranan is sent up to <strong>the</strong> mas<strong>the</strong>ad to see if <strong>the</strong> windis blowing <strong>the</strong>re also or not. He is flung from <strong>the</strong> swaying mast,but as he falls to his death he cries his message to his shipmates:“There is no storm al<strong>of</strong>t.” Amergin, who as poet—that is to say,Druid—takes <strong>the</strong> lead in all critical situations, <strong>the</strong>reupon chantshis incantation to <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> Erin. The wind falls, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y turn<strong>the</strong>ir prows, rejoicing, towards <strong>the</strong> shore. But one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Milesianlords, Eber Donn, exults in brutal rage at <strong>the</strong> prospect <strong>of</strong> puttingall <strong>the</strong> dwellers in Irel<strong>and</strong> to <strong>the</strong> sword; <strong>the</strong> tempest immediatelysprings up again, <strong>and</strong> many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Milesian ships founder, EberDonn's being among <strong>the</strong>m.
