CHAPTER III: THE IRISH INVASION MYTHS 113The three kings <strong>and</strong> three queens <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Danaans, with many<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir people, are slain, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> children <strong>of</strong> Miled—<strong>the</strong> last<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mythical invaders <strong>of</strong> Irel<strong>and</strong>—enter upon <strong>the</strong> sovranty <strong>of</strong>Irel<strong>and</strong>. But <strong>the</strong> People <strong>of</strong> Dana do not withdraw. By <strong>the</strong>irmagic art <strong>the</strong>y cast over <strong>the</strong>mselves a veil <strong>of</strong> invisibility, which<strong>the</strong>y can put on or <strong>of</strong>f as <strong>the</strong>y choose. There are two Irel<strong>and</strong>shenceforward, <strong>the</strong> spiritual <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> earthly. The Danaans dwellin <strong>the</strong> spiritual Irel<strong>and</strong>, which is portioned out among <strong>the</strong>m by<strong>the</strong>ir great overlord, <strong>the</strong> Dagda. Where <strong>the</strong> human eye can seebut green mounds <strong>and</strong> ramparts, <strong>the</strong> relics <strong>of</strong> ruined fortresses orsepulchres, <strong>the</strong>re rise <strong>the</strong> fairy palaces <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> defeated divinities;<strong>the</strong>re <strong>the</strong>y hold <strong>the</strong>ir revels in eternal sunshine, nourished by <strong>the</strong>magic meat <strong>and</strong> ale that give <strong>the</strong>m undying youth <strong>and</strong> beauty; [137]<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>nce <strong>the</strong>y come forth at times to mingle with mortal menin love or in war. The ancient mythical literature conceives <strong>the</strong>mas heroic <strong>and</strong> splendid in strength <strong>and</strong> beauty. In <strong>the</strong>ir combat with <strong>the</strong>Firbolgs <strong>the</strong> victory <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> intellect over dulness <strong>and</strong> ignorance isplainly portrayed—<strong>the</strong> comparison <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> heavy, blunt weapon110 Pronounced “Shee.” It means literally <strong>the</strong> People <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> [Fairy] Mounds.
