Maeldūn <strong>and</strong> his party ate <strong>and</strong>drank <strong>the</strong>ir fill, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n sailed <strong>of</strong>f again.The Isl<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ApplesBy <strong>the</strong> time <strong>the</strong>y had come here <strong>the</strong>y had been a long timevoyaging, <strong>and</strong> food had failed <strong>the</strong>m, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y were hungry. Thisisl<strong>and</strong> had precipitous sides from which a wood hung down, <strong>and</strong>as <strong>the</strong>y passed along <strong>the</strong> cliffs Maeldūn broke <strong>of</strong>f a twig <strong>and</strong> heldit in his h<strong>and</strong>. Three days <strong>and</strong> nights <strong>the</strong>y coasted <strong>the</strong> cliff <strong>and</strong>found no entrance to <strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong>, but by that time a cluster <strong>of</strong> threeapples had grown on <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> Maeldūn's rod, <strong>and</strong> each applesufficed <strong>the</strong> crew for forty days.The Isl<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Wondrous BeastThis isl<strong>and</strong> had a fence <strong>of</strong> stone round it, <strong>and</strong> within <strong>the</strong> fencea huge beast that raced round <strong>and</strong> round <strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong>. And anon itwent to <strong>the</strong> top <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong>, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n performed a marvellousfeat, viz., it turned its body round <strong>and</strong> round inside its skin, <strong>the</strong>skin remaining unmoved, while again it would revolve its skinround <strong>and</strong> round <strong>the</strong> body. When it saw <strong>the</strong> party it rushed at<strong>the</strong>m, but <strong>the</strong>y escaped, pelted with stones as <strong>the</strong>y rowed away.One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> stones pierced through Maeldūn's shield <strong>and</strong> lodgedin <strong>the</strong> keel <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> boat.The Isl<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Biting HorsesHere were many great beasts resembling horses, that torecontinually pieces <strong>of</strong> flesh from each o<strong>the</strong>r's sides, so that all <strong>the</strong>isl<strong>and</strong> ran with blood. They rowed hastily away, <strong>and</strong> were nowdisheartened <strong>and</strong> full <strong>of</strong> complaints, for <strong>the</strong>y knew not where [316]<strong>the</strong>y were, nor how to find guidance or aid in <strong>the</strong>ir quest.The Isl<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fiery SwineWith great weariness, hunger, <strong>and</strong> thirst <strong>the</strong>y arrived at <strong>the</strong>tenth isl<strong>and</strong>, which was full <strong>of</strong> trees loaded with golden apples.Under <strong>the</strong> trees went red beasts, like fiery swine, that kicked<strong>the</strong> trees with <strong>the</strong>ir legs, when <strong>the</strong> apples fell <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> beastsconsumed <strong>the</strong>m. The beasts came out at morning only, when amultitude <strong>of</strong> birds left <strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong>, <strong>and</strong> swam out to sea till nones,
