MAY 2009SOLICITATION FOR OFFERS OUTPATIENT CLINIC <strong>SFO</strong> NO. VA-101-XX-RP-XXXX[INSERT LOCATION OF FACILITY]installed. Electrical closets shall stack vertically, and shall not be further than 150 feet[45.72 m] apart, to limit maximum 120V circuit length to approximately 75 feet [22.86 m].Rooms that contain freestanding electrical equipment shall be sized so that sufficient space isprovided to add one additional section to each unit <strong>of</strong> freestanding equipment. Provideextended pad space and spare conduits that will facilitate future installation <strong>of</strong> equipment andconductors. Spare space shall be indicated on drawings.6.7.12 ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENTElectrical distribution components shall have copper bussing. Each panelboard shall contain25% spare breakers.6.7.13 LIGHTING FIXTURESStandardize lamp types across fixture types to limit the number <strong>of</strong> different lamp types andwattages used. Select the number <strong>of</strong> lamps and the fixture type according to therecommended finishes specified in each area to ensure the intended lighting levels.Linear 2-foot and 4-foot T8 fluorescent lamps with CRI>70 and rated lifespan <strong>of</strong> 20,000 hoursare the preferred interior lighting source. T5 2-foot and 4-foot double-ended linear sources areallowed for indoor locations. Compact fluorescent lamps in twin-, tri-, and quad-tube T4configurations are allowed.Color-corrected lamps, having a CRI <strong>of</strong> 85 or above and correlated color temperature between5000 degrees K and 6000 degrees K, are required in recovery rooms, operating rooms (colorshall match that <strong>of</strong> the surgical light), and dental rooms (examination, oral hygiene, oralsurgery, recovery, labs, treatment, and x-ray).Select fixtures and light sources with long operating lives; which utilize controlling elements(lenses, louvers, reflectors, etc.) designed to provide the best utilization <strong>of</strong> emitted light at thetask location; that are appropriate for the ambient temperature; and that are not prone to dirtaccumulation. In high ceiling areas, locate fixtures for maintenance access or provide accessfor maintenance equipment.Exterior lighting shall comply with energy requirements, and should comply with Dark Skyprinciples. When required by VA, exterior lighting designs are to meet the requirements <strong>of</strong>local outdoor lighting codes. Criteria recommended in the IESNA Guideline for SecurityLighting for People, Property, and Public Spaces (latest edition) shall govern the lightingdesign. Exterior lighting shall be coordinated with physical security, SSTV, and landscapingrequirements.6.7.14 BALLASTSElectronic high-frequency type ballasts shall be used for all linear fluorescent lamps, unlessspecial environmental and/or sensitive equipment concerns require the use <strong>of</strong> low-frequencyhybrid electronic-electromagnetic ballasts that operate lamps at 60Hz. Hybrid electronicelectromagneticballasts are allowed for surgical rooms and critical care units, as deemedappropriate by the design A/E. For metal halide, use pulse-start ballasts, and pulse-startlamps with glass or ceramic arc tubes.
