Chapter 15: Susta<strong>in</strong>able agriculture and rural development133environmentally friendly rural <strong>in</strong>dustrializationcannot be promoted.<strong>The</strong> uptake <strong>of</strong> SARD <strong>in</strong> rural communitiesrequires close collaboration betweeneducation, extension, tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and researchservice providers. <strong>The</strong> objective <strong>of</strong> creat<strong>in</strong>ga learn<strong>in</strong>g community through participatoryaction research also requires the collaboration<strong>of</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e m<strong>in</strong>istries, such as Health,Water, Community Services, etc. Too manygovernment development programmesare donor-dictated and short-term. <strong>The</strong>reis a temporal <strong>in</strong>fatuation with the latestparticipatory approach and time is seldomallowed for any <strong>of</strong> these systems to make alast<strong>in</strong>g impact. Rural communities requirecommitted, dedicated and available developmentworkers who have vision and whosee their pr<strong>of</strong>ession as a vocation rather thanjust a way to make a liv<strong>in</strong>g.<strong>The</strong> experience <strong>of</strong> Baraka AgriculturalCollege shows that, even <strong>in</strong> times <strong>of</strong>limited resources, there are <strong>in</strong>novativeways <strong>of</strong> provid<strong>in</strong>g rural communities withthe education, tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and extensionservices necessary to achieve susta<strong>in</strong>abledevelopment.
