172<strong>World</strong> Agr<strong>of</strong>orestry <strong>in</strong>to the Futuregardens <strong>in</strong> which trees are prom<strong>in</strong>ent, andthat these gardens are mostly managed bywomen (FAO 2001b). This important skillshould be taken <strong>in</strong>to consideration andseen as reason enough to enhance andstrengthen women’s roles <strong>in</strong> TOF resourcemanagement.Conclusions<strong>The</strong> biological characteristics and widerange <strong>of</strong> resource types provided by TOFmakes them <strong>in</strong>valuable <strong>in</strong> efforts to promotesusta<strong>in</strong>able rural development andrestore damaged ecosystems. <strong>The</strong>y can alsohelp improve the environment <strong>of</strong> urbanareas and raise yields and pr<strong>of</strong>its on lowproductivityagricultural land.
