Chiv<strong>in</strong>ge, University <strong>of</strong> ZimbabweAbstractS<strong>in</strong>ce its formation <strong>in</strong> 1978, the International Centre for Research <strong>in</strong> Agr<strong>of</strong>orestry (now the <strong>World</strong>Agr<strong>of</strong>orestry Centre) has generated a lot <strong>of</strong> general knowledge on agr<strong>of</strong>orestry. <strong>The</strong> need to advancethis knowledge for specific geographical locations led to the formation <strong>of</strong> the African Network forAgr<strong>of</strong>orestry Education (ANAFE) <strong>in</strong> 1993 and the Southeast Asian Network for Agr<strong>of</strong>orestry Education(SEANAFE) <strong>in</strong> 1999. S<strong>in</strong>ce then these networks have built condsiderable human capacity and developedregion-specific material. Many lecturers <strong>in</strong> agriculture, natural resource management and forestryhave been tra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> aspects <strong>of</strong> agr<strong>of</strong>orestry through short-term tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g programmes and workshopsorganized by ANAFE and SEANAFE. Capacity build<strong>in</strong>g has taken the form <strong>of</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> tra<strong>in</strong>ers, curriculadevelopment, writ<strong>in</strong>g teach<strong>in</strong>g materials, postgraduate scholarships for thesis research, staff andstudent exchange programmes, student attachment, establishment <strong>of</strong> demonstration plots, farmers <strong>of</strong>the future (FoF) programme (aimed at young school children), short courses and workshops for policymakers, farmers and education–research and extension l<strong>in</strong>ks. As a result <strong>of</strong> these efforts, many universitiesand colleges are now teach<strong>in</strong>g agr<strong>of</strong>orestry either as part <strong>of</strong> a course or as a full course at diploma,undergraduate and postgraduate levels. However, there are still many <strong>challenge</strong>s to capacity build<strong>in</strong>gand dissem<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong> technologies that need to be met <strong>in</strong> order to have adequate human resources tohelp reduce poverty and food <strong>in</strong>security, improve people’s livelihoods and reduce malnutrition. <strong>The</strong>se<strong>in</strong>clude more capacity build<strong>in</strong>g, cont<strong>in</strong>uous review <strong>of</strong> curricula, establish<strong>in</strong>g agr<strong>of</strong>orestry courses <strong>in</strong> all<strong>in</strong>stitutions <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>g agriculture and natural resource management, secur<strong>in</strong>g more f<strong>in</strong>ancial resources,and l<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g education with research and development to cont<strong>in</strong>uously build capacity <strong>in</strong> agr<strong>of</strong>orestry.IntroductionAgr<strong>of</strong>orestry can and <strong>does</strong> play a major role <strong>in</strong> halt<strong>in</strong>gand even revers<strong>in</strong>g the decl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> agricultural production.It can also help to <strong>in</strong>crease food security, reducepoverty and malnutrition, improve health and reduceland degradation. Agr<strong>of</strong>orestry education thereforerepresents a direct pathway to reduc<strong>in</strong>g Africa’s povertyand <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g fertility and agricultural production(Kung’u and Temu 2004). In their 2002 paper, Chiv<strong>in</strong>geet al. emphasized the need and role <strong>of</strong> agr<strong>of</strong>orestry capacitybuild<strong>in</strong>g at the regional level, while the situationat cont<strong>in</strong>ental level is given by Temu et al. (2003).S<strong>in</strong>ce the formation <strong>of</strong> ICRAF <strong>in</strong> 1987, much useful andrelevant knowledge and <strong>in</strong>formation on agr<strong>of</strong>orestryhas been developed. However, there were limitationsto how this <strong>in</strong>formation could reach relevant stakeholdersaround the world. Hence <strong>in</strong> April 1993 the
