<strong>World</strong> Agr<strong>of</strong>orestry <strong>in</strong>to the FutureThis book has been compiled from contributions by world experts <strong>in</strong> agr<strong>of</strong>orestry who met <strong>in</strong> Kenya<strong>in</strong> November 2003 to chart the future on the occasion <strong>of</strong> the 25 th anniversary <strong>of</strong> the <strong>World</strong> Agr<strong>of</strong>orestry Centre.<strong>The</strong> <strong>World</strong> Agr<strong>of</strong>orestry Centre is recognized as an <strong>in</strong>ternational leader <strong>in</strong> agr<strong>of</strong>orestry research, education and developmentsupport.It was established <strong>in</strong> 1978 as the International Council for Research <strong>in</strong> Agr<strong>of</strong>orestry (ICRAF), to promote agr<strong>of</strong>orestryresearch <strong>in</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g countries, <strong>in</strong> response to a visionary study by Canada’s International Development Research Centre(IDRC). Dur<strong>in</strong>g the 1980s, the Centre operated as an <strong>in</strong>formation council focus<strong>in</strong>g primarily on Africa. ICRAF jo<strong>in</strong>ed theConsultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) <strong>in</strong> 1991 to conduct global research on agr<strong>of</strong>orestry,transform<strong>in</strong>g itself <strong>in</strong>to the International Centre for Research <strong>in</strong> Agr<strong>of</strong>orestry. ICRAF is one <strong>of</strong> 15 <strong>in</strong>ternational centres <strong>of</strong> theFuture Harvest Alliance supported by the CGIAR. Its first strategic plan as a CGIAR member addressed poverty, food securityand environmental degradation <strong>in</strong> smallholder farms <strong>of</strong> sub-humid and semi-arid Africa. <strong>The</strong> Centre then expanded to Lat<strong>in</strong>America, South Asia and Southeast Asia, while strengthen<strong>in</strong>g its activities <strong>in</strong> four regions <strong>of</strong> Africa.
