111Ahad ha’Am. Thus the picture is clear: <strong>The</strong> God of Israel is exiled andkilled. <strong>The</strong>re is no God in heaven. But there is a god on Earth. <strong>The</strong> Godof Israel of the past was Moses. <strong>The</strong> god of Israel in this generation isMoses in his second incarnation, that is to say – Ahad ha’Am. Even as theother Hebrew authors spoke of themselves somewhat lightly and withhesitation, Ahad ha’Am spoke of himself with grave seriousness. Heaccompanied it with a clear and imperative form: “This is not the way!”Ahad ha’Am considered himself the utmost pope over the life of the Jews,and as the final arbiter. He was God, he and his court, the members of“<strong>The</strong> Sons of Moses”. <strong>The</strong> children of Israel pass before Ahad ha’Am andhis author friends, as if they were heavenly beings, and they decide how theJews shall live and in what they shall believe. What is good and what isevil. <strong>The</strong> motto of Ahad ha’Am was “Moses is the equal of all the rest ofIsrael.” That is to say, it is the duty of Israel to be indentured servants toMoses – Ahad ha’Am and the group of authors around him. Ahad ha’Amsaw, in Hebrew Literature, not a tool to serve the people, but a holy subjectthat the people must serve. Avraham Kariv came much later, anddetermined that Hebrew Literature is remarkable in its own right, and that itis the god that the people must serve instead of the God of Israel, who hadbeen killed by the Hebrew authors.It was not the truth that Ahad ha’Am sought to find and reveal, but to laythe foundations of rulership. For he, and his friends, sought to rule over the<strong>Ashkenazi</strong> People and to make governmental rulings. As a matter of fact,Ahad ha’Am made the following rulings: It is not settlements that shouldbe built in the Land of Israel, but first and foremost, schools. It isforbidden to busy oneself in diplomacy as Herzl had done, but only in“cultural work”, it is forbidden to accept the Uganda Proposition. In fact,God is not satisfied in making such decisions; but He makes sure they arerealized and acted upon. So too were Ahad ha’Am and his friends. Withviolent anger and through immoral means they made war against those whoopposed them. More than anything, the main war of God, or of a group ofgods, is against a competitor, or competitors, who rises against Him andchallenges His rule. <strong>The</strong>refore Ahad ha’Am, and his friends, fought withmurderous zeal against Herzl until they shortened his life and sunk him into
