It was our matriarch Sarah who provoked the banishment andAbraham was angry with her, but carried out her wish nevertheless. Ourmatriarch Sarah was a strong woman of high status, and she demandedmonogamy. <strong>The</strong>refore, it is possible to assume that the purpose of thebanishment was to erase and make forgotten the insults she suffered whileshe was barren. But this conclusion is not supported by the actions of ourmatriarch Rebecca, who provoked Jacob to ensure the birthright for himselfat the expense of his brother Esau. Jacob and Esau were both the twins ofour mother Rebecca, and there was no motivation, except for purefavoritism, which would justify Rebecca’s preference that the birthright goto Jacob. <strong>The</strong> struggle for preference, among the children of the Patriarchs,gets worse and worse from patriarch to patriarch. In the family ofAbraham, the son of a maidservant and the maidservant herself, are evicted.In the family of Isaac, the firstborn son of the mistress gets evicted. In thedays of Jacob the struggle for preference reaches its apex in the divided andbranched family, which was perhaps the most complex of all foundingfamilies in the history of mankind. <strong>The</strong>re is almost no kind of competitive
