230always avoided the backward classes within Sephardic Jewry, and thesocial, and educational, work that was done within these classes, by way ofthe “All Israel are Friends Society” was very limited. In contrast, thiscommand paid much attention to the struggle against Ashkenaz, at everyopportunity, and its undermining of the activities of Professor Weitzmann,during his efforts for the acceptance of the Balfour Declaration, brought usincalculable damage. <strong>The</strong> main branch of Sephardic leadership sees, in theState of Israel, first and foremost a receptacle into which can be directed allthe blemished and backward people of the Sephardic legions, in order tomake it easier for the healthier elements to take root in the lands of thewest. This easing for the healthier elements, by way of freeing them fromthe backward people, comes in two forms: Firstly, through removing thefinancial load that is involved with the backward, and failed, people. Andsecondly: Through preventing the bad impression, upon the gentilepopulation, which would have formed had the Sephardic waves of refugeesbrought with them the heavy burden of blemished and failed people whowere directed to the State of Israel.
